So steam has had a software section of their store for awhile, with steamboxes now going to be coming into the mix soon and steams push for big Picture mode be it via windows, mac, or linux. I think it would be a good idea to see if they would allow Plex into the software area of Steam as a free app. Even for normal use utilizing steam for auto updating could be very useful. not to mention being the first media application to launch on steam would be a lot of publicity.

Since SteamOS is based on Debian 7 Wheezy Plex HT should run without problem on it. You just have to add it ass an external Game/App after it is installed.
I haven't tried it yet but will do as soon as I have time.

How friendly is steam to completely free apps though? Typically with F2P games etc. steam allows them as they ultimately get a cut when a user spends money in the games cash shop. In Plex's case that would be plexpass subscriptions and I doubt plex would be willing to sacrifice a cut of that for the hopes of more publicity.
If they are friendly (without requiring a cut from plex)... It would be pretty cool. PMS could be in 'tools' section of library, with the PHT app showing up in normal library.

That is my question as well. Maybe it will be a Android/Win 8 App situation where you have to pay $4 for the app via steam and from there on you are good. I know I would love the 1 click install and auto updating that i would buy it in steam if i could. (And there are always steam sales for those who say $4 no way)
Ok I think I need to explain some things.
SteamOS as stated in last post is a Linux dist based on Debian composed of free software mostly carrying the GNU General Public License. Steam however is closed software but it still runs on Linux, that we can do whatever we want to.
This means we can install PMS and PHT on the machine if we want to and valve can't do anything about it and that is the route valve has choosen with SteamOS. However you will need to install it yourself on the system and then add it in steam manually like you can do in Windows and in OSX.
But you will not be able to install it from the steam store, but that is another thing. Running PMS and PHT on SteamOS should not be a problem.

I think the OP knows that, what he is suggesting though is to add the app to the steam store for two major benefits (one of which technically already exists). 1. Would be automatic updates (PHT already supports this I'm pretty sure) and 2. Would be increased publicity from it being directly listed in the store. So instead of having to find the plex site by other means, users could stumble across the app inside the steam store itself.

Well the second part about publicity I can understand but I don't think it will happen not for a while anyway. why?
PHT exists and is already working on Linux. The developers are a small team with many clients on their plates.
Regarding auto updates. PHT has autoupdate in Windows and OSX but not in Linux.
Why not in Linux well most Linux system uses some kind of package system for all applications that does essentially the same.
From the point of view of a Steam user, I'd love to see PHT in the steam store. Why go through the trouble of figuring out how to download, install, update and launch PHT when Steam takes care of all of that. And if I'm using Steam's big picture mode on my TV then I'll probably be using steam to switch between my games and streaming video content on PHT.
It's also great the Steam runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux same a PHT. Users would have a simple and consistent way to get PHT on all different types of devices.
+1 !
already using Steams-"Big-Picture" and would really appreciate to not need to switch between PHT and Big-Picture.
it also would be cool if you could set it to say what you were watching on your status for steam.
Right now I have PHT as a non steam game on windows 8.1 so I can have steam chat while watching and it mostly works.. although the steam UI doesn't always want to pull up unless I am in a video.
Oh and I asked one of my steam dev friends and he said to go here https://partner.steamgames.com/ to get more info (I am just talking to the devs or plex people)
This thread seems very confused. You don't run software purchased from Steam "in" Steam. I'm not sure what the ponit of putting a free application in the Steam store would be. Steam Machines don't change any of this either as they are just a Linux distro with Steam pre-installed that autoboot into Steam Big Picture Mode.

Yeah.. although downloading through steam would allow for some steam community features.. but I bet that is a very small % of plex users that would care. (basically what you are watching right now as game status)

Not sure the "currently watching" thing would work either. I imagine it would just show you are "Currently Playing PLEX".

I think it could work.... I think I have seen something similar on steam before.

With what? Becuase I haven't.
I was thinking the 'View Game Info' thing.. but looking at that.. it wouldn't help much.
PHT running on SteamOS
Steam Deck has a new bookmarks functionality that let’s people put their streaming services on it. You know where I’m going with this, perhaps it’s time to dust off the Plex client linux port ![]()
+1 to this idea
upvote it. don’t comment ‘+1’
