I initially invited a friend to use my Plex server as a Friend. Later, I decided to add them to my Plex Home. I could find no way to simply change their status from ‘Friend’ to ‘Home,’ so I used the ‘Add User’ method to add them to my Home, assuming that it would achieve the goal. But I was left with the same user in both Home and Friends.
Suggestion: It would be more intuitive if I could simply edit the existing Friend entry and change/move it to My Home. If this is not feasible, then when I add a user to My Home using a username or email address that already exists in my Friends list, the Friends item should be removed to avoid duplication.
This in intended. A Home User that has a plex.tv account is both in Home and Friend. This allows you to remove them from Home without also removing them from Friend. However, if you remove then from Friends, they also get removed from Home. You cannot have a Home User that is not also a Friend.
The steps you did to add your Friend to Home was correct. You cannot just convert them since as I said, they can exist in both forms. The Home account won’t exist and work until the user accepts the invitation. By leaving them also a Friend, they can continue to access you server under the old method until they accept.

Unless they are a renter.
