Restarting Plex for Oculus Quest Request

The request thread for Plex on Oculus Quest was unceremoniously closed in July, so I am restarting a request! Oculus sold about a million original Quests, and the demand is quoted at “5x” the original for the Oculus Quest 2, which is the first mass-market, self-contained VR headset, and it sold out for the holidays.

Plex already has an android-based VR app from the Oculus Go days, there are tools for developers to port their apps from the Go to the Quest, and the Quest basically is running on Android as well, so this shouldn’t take much effort. In addition, there is a big demand for collaborative viewing - Bigscreen is a popular app, but I think Plex will tear them to shreds with a user base that already has their movies ready to stream!

I second this

I second/third/whatever this! Purchased the Oculus Quest 2 a month ago. Would LOVE to be able to access my PMS with it and 'Watch Together" with friends who also have the Oculus Quest 2.

Lifetime Plex Pass member here, I’d love to get the app on the Quest/Quest 2. The drive in and big screen viewing would be very welcome during this lockdown.

Agreed! Casting my vote for this as well, recently purchased a Quest 2 and was blown away there was no plex app! Please develop this asap!!

I had not considered Plex before seeing it had a VR app in the past,

Quest/Quest 2 needs a really good media player to set the standard for others, as the others I’ve tried are lacking in features that I have seen in my brief time with Plex

I honestly would pay for a Plex subscription if it meant having VR access!

I´m still waiting for PLEX on my Oculus Quest.
It’s the ideal platform for personal video - but where is PLEX?!

Dear Plex Developers…

This request have been up several times and your only answer have been “no Plans at all for VR support”.

Please dont forget your legacy… remember where you came from, making videos, photos and music easy accessible in one app.
Many of your Plexpass and lifetime plexpass users are not from the United States and lately i have have seen unusable features like US News features, Free US Broadcast streams and lastly Retro gaming… but no VR support, not even a reason for not going that route.

So here is my ask, dont be like Trump and only concentrate on US users, but by all means, please make Plex Development great again… Lets get VR support on the Dev list!

Please, reconsider this!
It would be fantastic having PLEX in Oculus Quest.

Here here, I have been long term Plex user and life member for 8 years or so. The quest 2 is a game changer for Plex VR. A stand alone headset for 3-400 bucks with decent quality and a forthcoming 120hz upgrade and quest 3 in pipeline. Given cinemas are down for ygd next several years in reality, sharing Plex VR with friends will be amazing.

Throwing in here as well. Loved the Gear version until the developers screwed up a blue ring and refused to fix the bug. Can we get it on quest 2 (minutes the ring this time) please!

I’ve been using Plex via the web interface on the Oculus Quest 2. It… has some issues. Primarily in that if you try to pause, it does a continuous pause/unpause until you kill out (the X box in the playback control). Changing audio or subtitle tracks can also glitch it out in a similar fashion. It also requests lower resolution versions of files due to the magnified interface and the low ‘virtual resolution’ of the web page interface in the Quest2, however, you can also just tell it to direct-play whichever resolution file you choose. Fullscreen mode does jump it up bigger and black out the background, but fullscreen video in Quest Browser isn’t repositionable, so it lacks that lay-back feel. Still, It’s pretty nice, given the glitches involved with the browser on the quest2. I also watch some other sources using this method (Twitch, Crunchyroll, etc). Some DRM’d videos (Crunchy, Hulu) do experience an occasional single black frame in the browser that is… annoying, but not a killer. This doesn’t happen with the Plex playback luckily.

Previously, some people were able to use the AndroidTV version sideloaded on the Quest, and it showed up as an ‘unofficial video channel’ in the Quest TV app. Unfortunately v25 and v26 of the Quest2 firmware has broken that functionality, at least with the Plex player app.

I previously used PlexVR on Daydream, but that has gone to the Google Graveyard.

If Plex refuses to make a specific app for Quest2, could they maybe at least look into the bugs with the Plex WebUI on Quest Browser?

Just adding my voice to the cacophony of Plex users who are simply asking for an explanation: Why has Plex paused all development on VR? Were the user numbers too low? Does Plex not believe in the long-term viability of the platform? What criteria would have to be met for development to restart?

As mentioned many times before on this forum, Oculus Quest 2 looks to be the tipping point where VR reaches the masses. Plex should be a pioneer in this space, not a laggard.

C’mon Plex, all we’re asking for is an explanation.

As someone who enjoyed the Plex VR app for the Oculus Go, I would REALLY love for Plex to support VR again.

Please stop closing these requests! People have continuingly showed interest in this with their votes, and you have simply been closing them as more or less “will not do” with no real reason given.

If you aren’t going to support it, please let us know why. Maybe tell us what went wrong with the Oculus Go app?

It’s pathetic that Plex only supports the defunct Go and Daydream platforms.

Submitting my vote for Quest support.

We don’t support, them anymore. We only left the app is those stores for those who want to use them. They do not get any other updates.

That is extremely disappointing for the tone deaf responses to some of the most loyal and long term supporters of Plex.

I have been continuing to struggle through using the Plex VR app on the Gear VR and one of the biggest things giving me pause to purchase the Quest 2 is the extremely poor Plex experience I am reading about.

DLNA is the only viable option? What is this 2004? You have a rapidly growing market in which users are used to paying for apps. You could easily charge for this app.
