Rewinding Across Subsequent Shows from Live TV

For a while, I’ve noticed an issue with rewinding Live TV, particularly if I’ve watched for a long time and I am now watching the subsequent show on the same channel that I started. When clicking the rewind button on the Apple TV remote, instead of jumping back 10 seconds, the playback jumps to the time that I started watching the station. From there, it doesn’t seem to let you ff/rew/pause the live broadcast. The only fix seems to be to tune to a different channel, then tune back to the original channel. Doing this forgets the temporary recording of the live TV that you were watching.

Tonight, at about 8:30 PM, I started watching the Olympics on the local NBC affiliate. That ran until the local news broadcast started at 10:00. At this point, touching the center pad of the remote shows that Plex knows the broadcast has switched over to the next show from the guide data. A few minutes into the broadcast, I missed something they said, so clicked the left side of the remote d-pad to jump back 10 seconds. Instead of jumping back to something like 10:04:15 PM, it jumped all the way back to 8:35:00, or whatever the time was that I started watching the Olympics. Pause didn’t work, FF didn’t work (screen blanks briefly and then resumes from the same place it was at, trying to scrub the playback head didn’t work either. The only way to recover was to select channel 3.2 from the guide and then select channel 3.1 again. However, I was now at what was Live, with no playback history, so I couldn’t see the missed part from the news broadcast.

Been this way on the ROKU forever, I see it all the time. I reported similar probably a dozen or more times years ago. Each time the threads would get closed by PLEX declaring it fixed with one of the fanboys agreeing, but it never was. PLEX has failed to address it and since it looks like all devices are getting the “same as the ROKU experience” I suspect you’ll never see it fixed. About 2 or 3 years ago I served a one year ban on the forum for continuing to report it! :slight_smile: :slight_smile:

Fast Forward and Rewind on live or currently recoding shows on AppleTV get sketchy as well.

Particularly after you get past a show marker or into extended recording time, touching FF or RW will make it skip back some random amount, hitting it enough times will cause it to go back to the beginning and stick there.

As on the ROKU, this has been a persistent issue for years.

Thank you both for confirming that this is a known issue and one that can’t seem to get an actual fix from the developers. I’m guessing there are some architectural issues with how Plex handles individual shows that leads to this issue related to seeking across show boundaries on Live TV. I seem to remember that the native Apple TV app from Silicon Dust for the HDHomeRun also had similar issues.

I rarely watch an actual live broadcast (haven’t for 20+ years), but did for the Super Bowl - I’ll go back to watching recordings once they are completed instead of trying to watch an actual live broadcast…
