Would be nice, as in "I need it yesterday" if Plex would also support culture id's in their language codes

 

Like in Chinese, I would like that an srt file could be named "myMovie.zh-cht.srt" as well as "myMovie.zh-chs.srt"

Last time i checked, chi & zho are both valid language codes for Chinese. Im not sure exactly, but last time I checked, plex uses the ISO list for languages (http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php). Granted Plex and other apps might not specifically distinguish the 2 codes beyond indicating "Chinese".

To be honest I am not sure if this is something Plex can fix. If FFMPEG simply reports "Chinese" or summarizes the language code to just zh regardless what one is used, then Plex is likely out of luck here.

From Google'ing, it appears that .NET 4 has this issue too, where it can use 2 different language codes for Chinese, but only reports one regardless what's actually used.

Sorry, but I fail to see where FFMPEG comes into the picture here?

I do consider the devs @ Plex far better than the devs @ Microsoft :P

Plex uses FFMPEG in a lot of ways, even in the media analysis. For sidecar subtitles I could see this being adjusted.

Problem is that it would be a special case handling on all system & that makes the problem worse. Lot of the times for language handling, projects like to use established libraries. More than likely the library in use doesn't distinguish it and so a special exemption has to be made on every platform to make this work. That might not be viable / worthwhile.
