I’m sure I’ve read somewhere but now the only thing I can find is from 2015…
What’s the latest recommended way to rip a dvd collection (purchased as well as home movies and recorded from free to air TV)?
Currently working with Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and would love to rip directly to my Seagate personal cloud (NAS) if possible
Use MakeMKV to rip DVDs & Blu-ray discs.
MakeMKV copies the movie from the disc to your computer w/o alteration. The video & audio are in the same format as on the disc.
Use Handbrake if you need to transcode the video.
With Handbrake you can transcode the video to H.264 or H.265 and the audio to AAC, AC3 or other formats.
Handbrake has many presets for various devices. If you’ve never used the product, start with the HQ 1080p30 Surround or Super HQ 1080p30 Surround preset (in General presets) and adjust as needed.
For broadest compatibility among all Plex clients, use a mp4 container, H.264 video at High@4.0 or lower, AAC 2.0 audio, and text/SRT subtitles. You can add a secondary AC3 5.1 audio stream for those clients that support multi-channel audio.
FYI, in Handbrake, using the above referenced presets, be sure & select the Web Optimized box on the Summary tab. It is a good thing and not checked by default for some reason.
Thank you @FordGuy61, worked a treat!
