This is a feature request for simple SBS 3D videos, and let the television handle the 3D part. The first 3 steps should be easy, since it is straight forward, and would work cross client. The last step might need some UI rules. But achieving 1-3 would be the most amazing addition to Plex and my 3D experience.
Steps
1. Recognize videos as SBS by their file name. (look for the combination of 3D and SBS).2. When selecting the movie, show the 3D version as an option, like other Multi-version files, ie 720p, 1080p etc3. When playing a movie tagged as 3D, duplicate the subtitles at the bottom to match the duplicated image. Simply show the subtitles side by side on the screen.4. When showing OSD (timeline, clock, video controls etc) only display them on one half of the screen.
The rest is handled by the television. :-) Samsung and other 3D tv's has an auto 3D detection and would switch to 3D mode.
If that was so, I really doubt that lots of people are having problems playing 3d movies, if not named according to the std, and beside that, remember that it's not a native player on the devices, but plex
yeah, but the TV’s recognise a SBS signal apparently.
He has a point though… If we could somehow enable a “3D” mode in Plex where subtitles were displayed twice and controls were shrinked to half then most of the 3DTVs would be fine.
For instance my panasonic viera just cuts the width in half and resizes each part to full width again and displays it after each other when you enable 3D mode.
if subtitles were be double it would be ok. Now it gets half the subtitle, resizes it , takes the other half, resizes it, and displays it after each other. Same for the menu. It is all screwed up now.
Even on the Samsung we have to tell the player to go into 3D mode, it will not do this based on the contents of the file, but we do it by checking the filename as stated above and then forcing the TV into that mode. Showing subtitles is done in the client by using an overlay, so they are separated from the movie. It's very hard to do the same with subs that are embedded into the movie for obvious reasons. So making this work on any TV without a native client running on them, might be a challenge.
This would only work with SRT (and similar) subtitles. In my plex, I have the “adjust display refresh rate to match video”, which updates the display on my TV. My samsung 3D TV then checks if the new signal is 3D SBS (by analysing the picture, not the signal), and automatic switch to 3D mode. So the only thing i need for a complete 3D Home Theater, is the subtitles duplication and (if posible) OSD limited to one half of the screen. The rest is automated by my TV when I start and stop a movie simply by activating “adjust display refresh rate to match video”.
