Hi, I have never been able to access my server (in my apartment) on the Roku app (in my apartment) without having remote access turned on
But with the new paywall around remote access I’m concerned I won’t be able to use it at all now. This is the only way I watch Plex and there is absolutely no way I am going to pay for the privilege of watching my own files in my own home
Is there something wrong with my setup or is there going to be some sort of exception for these new charges?
You haven’t said anything about the setup yet. What operating system is the Plex server running on? Is the Roku app running on a Roku TV or a Roku Streaming device? How are these two devices connecting to each other?
I’m leaning towards them using Internet provided by their apartment, and the system is simply set up to not allow devices on the building LAN to talk to each other.
Something else to look into is a DNS issue. Specifically, DNS rebinding protection can result in the behavior described.
If you can, configure your Roku device to use a public DNS provider (I prefer CloudFlare [1.1.1.1] but Google [8.8.8.8] works, too).
The easiest way to do this is likely to configure the DNS servers in the DHCP settings on your router (this will change the DNS servers handed out to your devices via DHCP). Then restart your Roku device so that it picks up the DNS changes via DHCP.
Then, test to see if the Roku client shows up as local in the dashboard when playing media.
