Unable to connect remotely with Roku devices....started Oct 1st

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2571

Hello,
Along with others the past few days we lost remote connectivity with plex.
Have not had any issues for over a year until this time. However, it’s only affecting Roku devices (Ultra) connecting remotely. .Can connect remotely via web/pc with no issues. The roku in the house on the local network works fine as well.

Ensured plex server set fully accessible outside network.
Power cycled remote rokus to no avail.
Signed out/in of plex app on remote Roku to no avail.
Changed advanced settings in plex app on remote roku for allow unsecure connections always to no avail.

Any suggestions? Not sure if this is related to the outage from a few days ago but it occurred at the same time.

Thank you!

Try the answer I posted here: Remote Access suddenly not working anymore

The problem is not the Roku specifically, but how the PLEX server and the ROKU are communicating. You may need to lower the security a bit for remote users.

SavioDesign,

Thank you for your response. I can definitely try that. Did something change on the Plex side that caused this?

I’ll check it tonight and report back.

No, it’s a bit sporadic and mostly based on networks and devices, thus very hit or miss.
Either way, those are safe settings to start with.

Which one would I specify as they both have different values. The one from the public address or private address?

SavioDesign,

I guess I messed something up. I picked the one that was displayed under public. It didn’t work and set it to not available outside network. I tried to flip it back and it changed the public address to the same as the private. Now it always stays on not available outside network. Unfortunately I didn’t grab a screenshot of the original address. :frowning: Any way to get that back?

Set both PORTS to 32400, if these aren’t matching the communications fail
e.g.
Private 192.168.X.XX: 32400 Public XX.X.XX.XX : 32400
or
Private LAN IP:192.168.X.XX:Port 32400 Public XX.X.XX.XX : Port 32400

Interesting. The public ip had a value that was different than 32400 and I used it. When I did it actually reverted to 32400 and both private and public now indicate 32400. However the remote access now always indicates not available outside network whereas it did indicate access before with the different public port. I don’t remember what it was. If I try to enable the remote access it indicates it’s accessible and then quickly reverts back to not available. Yet it seems it can access via web.

** I checked and apparently still have remote access via pc’s. Not for the rokus. I also noticed that every time I go back to the plex server the manually specify port option is always selected even if I un-select it. But the public ip doesn’t indicate internet access anymore and the message persists that it’s unavailable outside network. Is there any way to get that public port back to default again and show green?

It sounds like you may need to adjust your router’s Firewall Table, NAT Config, or UPnP a bit. I had the same thing occur when I first started, and I’ve moved from a Windows PC to a personalized NAS Server, so I get it.

Take a look here for a more in-depth approach at these items:

SavioDesign,
Thanks for the tips. I think at this point I’m going to leave the router out of the equation. I’ve never had to do anything on it before except all the defaults. I should have mentioned I run the plex server on a synology Nas. I see others posting same issues with the message that remote connection no longer available outside network a few seconds after refreshing. Was the tip for setting the ports to 32400 above to be done without setting up something on the router?

I can post plex log files later and hoping a plex admin can look into this. Windows machines still connecting with no issue (even with the remote connection not available message), just not the rokus.

Yes. That tip is a general one, you don’t have to use that specific port, but it makes it easier especially with providing logs to Admins

Personally, I’m on a TrueNAS server, running jailed instances so I can pretty much control everything including versions and upgrades in a manual fashion.

ok great. I was concerned I made those changes without first making changes in the router. Appreciate your efforts to help. As mentioned we can connect with windows but it’s not a true direct connect to the server.

I replied to another post where someone also had the port settings as above and they are getting the same unavailable outside network message every time they refresh. I’ll get those log files posted later.

SavioDesign,

I managed to get the status back to fully accessible outside network! I removed the check mark from the port box and I guess after waiting a bit it reverted back to the default again. All items can access again except for the rokus. I wonder if it’s part of the cert issue they had. Or it’s just a roku/plex thing going on with some roku models.

I didn’t see a place to actually download the log files in plex so I guess I’ll have to manually get them from the nas drive plex folder.

Cert reset helped some issues.
