Roku ASS tags on SRT subtitles - display problem

TLDR; the {\an8} tag is shown in Roku and not removed/handled properly. Desktop, web, and mobile Plex players don’t have this problem.

Maybe this is just my TV, but for reference, I’m running Plex on Roku Version 7.29 - build 15.

I wish Plex devs would look at this and take it more seriously because I’ve tried to alert them before. Now it looks like the official subtitles (from streaming sites) have ASS tags on them, even tho the subtitles are SRT. So it’s going to look like that for everyone who is using that official SRT file and who has the SRT embedded in the MKV file. This is from Silo S01E07 at 35:03 with SDH subs.

While Plex Web and other players handle this properly ({\an8} = moving the subtitles up), Roku doesn’t. If it’s a problem with Roku itself, then Plex should just remove those ass tags before it feeds the subs to Roku. I’m sure Plex already has a function to format/clean the text before it sends the string to the player. It would be a simple regex: \{\\.+?\}

And yes, yes, I know SRT isn’t SUPPOSED TO have ASS tags… but the fact that more and more SRT subtitles have them and the fact that more players are reading them correctly it’s making people believe that they can use ASS tags on SRT files… which means the trend of using ASS tags on SRT files will accelerate not slow down… so this will only appear more and more.

If someone with a Roku wants to test it, it’s pretty easy. Find any SRT file and add {\an8} anywhere in the text. It would be a relief if it’s just my TV.

I have seen this on my Roku players too.
