I have a TCL Roku TV with 7.0 build 24 of the plex app running (specifically 7.0.24.8154-127760991).
My server build is 1.31.2.6783.
On the TCL TV, it will not honor the position settings in subtitles, most notably an8 which puts them at the top so they don’t stomp on credits and things. As a matter of fact, it acts like it just flat out doesn’t understand them as it actually displays the “{\an8}” tag along with the rest of the line.
I honestly can’t recall for sure, but I swear this used to work on this TV. I have a roku express hooked up to an older TV and it has the exact same version of the plex app on it and the subtitles are properly displayed using the same source.
Is this some sort of a known issue? Am I missing a setting or something?
Answering my own question…
The issue seems to be that this TV does not like ASS tags in an SRT file/track. If I have the file either embedded in an mkv or externally and change it be an ASS type, it works. Literally just changing the file extension on the file from SRT to ASS does the trick for me. I’m going to assume this is a problem with the TCL version of Roku but hopefully if anyone else out there has this issue, they’ll know how to address it (unless TCL/Roku do first).
Expanding on this a bit…the Roku on this TV is 11.5.0 build 4323-88. The one on my roku express is build 6400. The express handles everything. The TV though is quite different.
If the srt has the position tags, here’s what does and doesn’t work…
These work:
Extracted as an external file with an extension of .ass will use the position tags
Converted to a true .ass format and either embedded within the file or used externally with an extension of .ass works
These don’t work:
Extracted as an external file with an extension of .srt just shows the tag {an8} but doesn’t move it
Embedded in the file with a codec for srt acts the same as if it were external
Embedded within the file but changing the codec to be ass shows no subs at all
Also interesting to note is that the display is different when it is using ass even if it’s just a renamed srt - the font is way much thicker.
I have no idea if any of this is useful to anyone but I wanted to share just in case
