Please add feature to adjust the offset/speed of internal/external subtitles!! You have it available for SmartTV, but you don’t have this feature on Roku. Please add, it’s very important.
I think before they start providing timing features, they should concentrate on getting the subtitles to display. When switching between ‘Replay’ and ‘Always On’ the subtitles disappear completely until the video is restarted.
Also, the way subtitles are handled is about the most awful design known to man. The Roku Team need to visit The FireTV Team for pointers on how subtitles should work and the FireTV Team needs to visit The Roku Team for pretty much everything else.
In before potential lock - because, surely, there must be a thousand of this exact request spread out over a decade with thousands of collective votes wasted (as intended).
I do agree however, that timing features should be developed for any media player… including timing for the lips and the sounds of the words (that seem to live in different zip codes at times), but first we need to have them displayed, then we can concentrate on getting them timed. First things first.
I combat timing issues BEFORE they go to Plex (Subtitle Edit, for instance), knowing there isn’t a Plex solution (but should be - eventually). This does require manual intervention, but so does a feature request (family) that has lived for over a decade with no resolution. I don’t have that much time left.
Oh, I may have experienced that and didn’t even realize it. I thought it was some kind of incompatibility issue with the *.srt file itself. However, this may depend on the platform? I’ve had the most trouble with my Samsung SmartTV. That I’ve had to restart. I absolutely hate PLEX GUI for SamsungTV! Aesthetically speaking It really SUCKS, and difficult to navigate. It’s as though PLEX has not made any major updates to SamsungTV in ages. The only reason why sometimes I like using my Samsung, is because of my optical setup. However, I find PLEX’s Roku app is 9,000 times better to use than Samsung.
Timing is just as important as off setting. You may not realize it but, how your subtitles work depends on the movie source it came from. Webrips, BRrips, Brrips Theater versions, special editions, extended versions, etc, etc. They all make a difference. And when you’re downloading subtitles, you don’t know anything about them, other than they’re supposed to be for the movie you want to watch. Second, the people providing those subtitles don’t know the source, or simply don’t care.
It is also important to note that some people who have disabilities, who may not be able to read as fast should have the ability to make those kinds of adjustments. Yes, I can edit the subtitle. But at the same time none of us should have to do that. Neither should this be something that people of a lesser technical aptitude be required to learn how to do. If you watch a lot of foreign films, this can become a burden.
Big +1. The inconsistent support of this feature among clients is baffling to me. Being able to shift the subtitle in the client fixes a host of timing issues, and is a quality of life improvement for hard at hearing folks, foreign films, and recorded shows and movies with water marks, commercials, etc.
To manage this manually at the source can be done, but is a bear for large libraries.
Roku external sets are one of the most popular streaming devices. And while it is true that Smart TVs have a greater market share, that’s mostly due to convenience. An external streaming device beats out the built in Smart OS in features, function, UI, and performance almost every time.
I would think most plex users would be power users, and thus want the extra control and performance the external devices offer.
Please re-consider supporting subtitle offsets in Roku external streaming devices.
One additional note - it’s not just “foreign” films, for some Roku users even films in English are foreign. I can buy Roku in Europe and watch Holywood films, but without synced subtitles, I only understand about a half of the dialogue as a non-native. With subtitles I’m perfectly fine.
Subtitle support is just all over the place on Roku, unfortunately. I’ve being trying for months to solve one little problem with no help from anyone.

There’s also a very serious issue with external subtitles getting completely desynched after resuming, but that’s being ignored too.

I use subtitles for everything i play since I enjoy the original audio but I’m not a native english speaker, and the support on these issues has been non-existent.
I have to enable Roku Captions Mode each time I watch something with subtitles. wish that would stick.
That should stick actually. I don’t re-enable every time.

Perfect. I keep seeing people commenting here about buying Roku, but for those who need subtitles, Roku is a nightmare.
I bought mine in 2013 when Chromecast, Firetv, and Shield didn’t exist yet, and since then they haven’t evolved much their OS (user perspective).
They were pioneers but didn’t keep up with the competitors, and I believe Roku Tv is the next to go.
You have to select “Always On.”
The new Roku Sticks have changed significantly. Although I can’t recall having major issues with my Roku itself, the newer versions are pretty slick and nice. We have to remember that there are three important factors that effect our Roku exprience.

Rokus are not like a transistor radio, where when you turn it on it should always work. A radio doesn’t need several elements for it to work. It just does.
Yeah, I retired my Roku a year ago and have been using FireTV since then. I can’t talk about their sticks, but a friend of mine has two Roku TVs, and when I look at their OS, is the same as looking at my old Roku and they very often have problems with subtitles watching movies that are in my Plex.
My only complaint about FireTV is how biased their OS is. It’s all the time trying to sell digital content to you.
Echoing the need for subtitle offset on the Roku! I use a Roku 3, and generally Plex works just fine on it. But I’ve only just started trying to use subtitles, and what a disappointment. In almost everything I’ve tried, the subtitles have been out-of-sync, and when I discovered subtitle offset on my PC, I thought: Ah, problem solved! Only to discover there is no subtitle offset in the Roku app.
Plex devs, if you are going to fix just one thing this year, this would be the first thing I’d ask for.
Just loaded Plex on a new Roku Streaming Stick Plus. A few movies I have are not well aligned with the available subtitle files… if I could just offset them by a few seconds in either direction, they would be watchable. Please add this support for the Roku app!
This started happening a long time ago when they switched from a proprietary “subtitle display engine” to the default Roku one, which is just awful. And apparently they don’t use either Roku nor subtitles that much, since every subtitle issue is just swept under the rug.
Try being me, using Roku as my primary device and watching every piece of content with full subtitles enabled. Yeah, what a pleasure.
I am - and it’s working fine - so long as I don’t rely on Opensubtitles and use
my own. <—a requirement 'cause as you know there is no way to fiddle with them if they’re off.
- External subtitles, when resuming playback, can go randomly out of sync, forcing you to transcode your content if you want them back in sync.
- Sync in general is not correct. 90% of the time a line starts a few ms later than it’s supposed to.
- Automatic subtitle selection is completely broken for my use-case and it’s been months since I brought this topic up, with what seems to be no interest from the developers (but we already discussed this in another post).
So “fine” as in: I can use them. Sure.
But “fine” as in: It’s a good experience. Nope.
I’m glad if you don’t have this issues, good for you, but I’m sure I’m not the only one. And I’m not talking about the subtitles search function, I never used it and never will. Every single subtitle I have and use is manually checked for sync and error correction.
Please add this! Roku is a dominant platform, this seems odd to not be included.
