roku plex live tv
Hi,
Did you get it sorted out or did get it setup but you are having problems?
Please review the FAQ pages for Live TV - Roku devices do not support Live TV at this time.
Live TV is not available on Roku yet.
It is only available on iOS devices (NOT ATV 4) and Android TV (NOT Android app).
Yes, Roku is probably coming.
No, there is no timeline.
yep, two plex servers running HDhomerun extended (over air antenna), have servers setup with schedules to record to my local nas… the recorded shows show up in the roku plex client (after recording), but this is too hard for others in the family to manage (schedule, etc…), so can’t cut the cord yet!!! need roku / plex to get this beta going!
Agreed. Need this working in all most popular device client apps: ATV4, FireTV/Firestick, Roku. Just got my HD HomeRun Prime today, and have no way to watch on a TV without casting (and I don’t even know if that works yet…) I’ll keep playing, but we at least need to get this going for at least the three most popular OTT boxes mentioned above. No way this currently can pass the “Wife” test…have to stick with our TiVos for now. Concept is great, but in order to displace STB and integrate with Plex, we need to be able to seamlessly have access from within the Plex Client device apps for Live TV. IMHO, this is a critical, fundamental capability in order for Plex DVR function to be successful. IMHO, it should be top priority.
Amazing. Live TV has been out for four minor version releases, technically three since 1.7.5 is really 1.7.4 to fix an install issue on one platform. Yet people expect new platforms to be added first before fixing issues with tuner allocation, closed captioning/subtitles, recording multiple shows at once that were not scheduled but perhaps resulted because of viewing the show using Live TV, recordings that never finish and hang in Plex until a restart, and transcode issue with existing clients. How about they fix the other issues first then focus on adding other streaming players. I have gone back to 1.6.1 because of the tuner allocation issue.

Understood, and agree Server needs to be fixed…otherwise everything else is moot. That being said, the concept "volume sell” is in providing ubiquitous and easy access to Plex + TV (Live & DVR) in general, allowing for STB replacement and cord-cutting or cord-slimming. That can’t happen when we don’t have a client (except for AndroidTV I suppose) that allows for viewing on a TV. I appreciate being able to view on my iPad, but I frankly don’t watch on my iPad all that often…I much prefer my 70in, 50in, or even 36in Televisions. Supporting this on Amazon FireTV, Firestick, Roku, and Apple TV v4 provides the experience the market is looking for. I found InstaTV app for ATV4 that works quite well and will use that for Live TV until Plex can get this going.
From what I can see, the two things that are going to hinder this effort are:
1.) Lack of client devices for viewing
(Addressed above)
2.) Lack of consistency in Tuner device (w/CableCARD) policy enforcement.
TiVo adheres and follows CCI byte distro from the Service Provider as required. (In my case it is Verizon FiOS, which is probably the most lenient service in regard to which channels are CCI “copy once”.). But TiVo never has an issue with CCI byte “copy once”, and all channels are viewable/recordable…you just can’t move copies off of the TiVo…say with something like KMTTG. With Silcon Dust, it seems any channel with CCI "Copy Once”are not being allowed to be viewed, at all, even though the CableCARD is authorized to decrypt them. Why is TiVo able to do it, but Silicon Dust HDHomeRun is not? I could even understand better with Premiums like HBO and Cinemax, but all Fox commercial channels are set “copy once” (per request from Fox), so apparently I cannot even Live-TV view channels like Fox News, FX, or National Geographic with the HDHomeRun. Makes no sense to me, UNLESS CCI byte "copy once”is also being interpreted by Silicon Dust to mean “Must have HDCP”…which is not necessarily in conformance with reasonable and customary interpretation of the rules. Or is it? It really doesn’t matter, since HDCP enforcement should take place on the CLIENT device that the HDHomeRun is streaming to…hence, if you have a Client App on an ATV4, you are HDCP compliant. (There is even a standard for this implementation of HDCP: DTCP-IP). In any event, this is a HUGE issue that needs to be fixed correctly/appropriately. Again, as I say, this is not ready for prime time, and never will be if it can’t match other 3rd party (I.e, “Retail”) DVR solutions like TiVo.

My guess? $$$$

Possibly. But no matter what, Silicon Dust still needed to get the HDHomeRun Prime certified/approved by CableLabs. Once they paid for that, it is just (mostly) about SW dev.

The HDHomeRun Prime is certified/ approved by CableLabs. The HDHomeRun Prime works fine for all channels in Microsoft Media Center regardless of if they are flagged as “Copy Once”.
There are issues with the SiliconDust HDHomeRun DVR software in this respect that still need to be addressed but as you said that is a software development and Cable Labs certification issue.
It’s also worth noting that, IIRC, the cable industry likely wanted nothing to do with CableCard or at least not in the way it was mandated. The cable industry is perfectly happy forcing more expensive cable box / (clunky) DVR rentals on its subscribers and doesn’t necessarily want cheap alternatives like ~$1 to ~$2 CableCard rentals. Let alone renting these cheap cable cards for devices that they don’t own like a PC. There is no motivation there for them so that is part of the reasoning behind making it difficult.
I appreciate the iOS support as well. Without it I would have no proof of concept of the Live TV or Time Shifting features of Plex DVR. Still I would prefer a 65" or 55" display over an iPad or iPhone. I can also direct play to a PC connected to a large screen TV whereas Transcoding is necessary when using an iOS device.
InstaTV is not a cheap app to get going on the Apple TV IIRC. Another app that might work is “Channels” (and cChannels DVR) but that might not be any cheaper. I wish the free SiliconDust “HDHomeRun View” app were available for Apple TV but IIRC it is not.
Amazon FireTV / FireTV stick users can just download the free SiliconDust “HDHomeRun View” app. Android users can also use the “HDHomeRun View” app as well (I think). I’ve tried the “HDHomeRun Viewer” app on a FireTV and it works fairly well for streaming Live TV. Navigation is also easy with there unique take on the guide. Interestingly enough, the App has been updated so there are now remnants of the “HDHomeRun DVR” software integrated into the “HDHomeRun View” app.
IMO it’s worth it to at least take a look at the SiliconDust software in part because its free. After doing so myself I was tempted to pay the ~$35 for the Full HDHomeRun DVR software (for the year).
