Roku Ultra 2018 Will No Longer Direct Play H.265

Server Version#: 1.33.0.2444-a220eae4
Player Version#: Roku Ultra 2018

Same video direct plays to 2020 Chromecast Google TV

X265 10bit encoded video. Roku had been able to Direct play these but this new video I encoded transcodes on the Roku, while the Chromecast Direct Plays it with no problem.

I’d just use the new Chromecast but my wife finds it overly complicated and my friends have Roku Ultras because I had recommended that as good for H.265 Direct Play.

Are there any settings I can tweak on the Roku for this?

I’m almost certain that a Roku Ultra 2018 can Direct Play H.265 10-bit.

Can you share the media info for an example file? There are many other variables that could be involved.

One of the most common issues is subtitles. Are you attempting to play a video with subtitles enabled?

Strangely, today it’s working correctly, even though I had already tried restarting the Roku when I first noticed the problem, with no improvement. That was a couple days ago. Now I just went back and re-tested, and the Roku is “Direct Streaming” (which I think is normal). Playback on the Chromecast is “Direct Play”.

I don’t know what changed. The video is the same and my Plex server has been running continuously since I first observed the problem. Perhaps the Roku just needed a rest?? Perhaps my server misread the playback capabilities of the device and decided it needed to transcode the video?

Maybe! Sometimes I feel better after a nap, too.
