Roku Ultra. Extremely laggy interface, frequent lockups of app with no response to the remote

As title. Seems to be a very common problem. Previous version worked almost flawlessly, aside from some issues when looking at cast and crew causing a soft lock of the app.

Roku Ultra 4802X

Software version 14.6

Server running on Ubuntu 24.04.3, server connected to router over 2.5GB LAN, Roku is the only device connected to the router on the 5GHz wifi channel.

So, a less intuitive UI, which takes more clicks to navigate and is clearly made for a touch screen interface, which lags and locks up. 5 stars.

I was able to resolve the unresponsive Roku remote issue by clearing the Roku cache:

From Roku Home Screen: Press the Home buttons 5 times.

Press the Up button.

Press the Rewind (not left arrow) button 2 times.

Press Fast Forward (not right arrow) 2 times.

Wait. Roku will eventually restart itself.

Other issues remain, but I hope this helps. :slight_smile:

Thanks for the tip, truly appreciated. I gave it a shot but no change in UI response. I’m not sure it’s the same problem. The initial response to inputs seems to be quite quick, but the UI then lags before loading any information on the new page. Everything us taking much longer to load than previous versions, or the android or web interfaces on other devices.

Yeah. I misunderstood. That’s different from the problem I saw, which was that button presses became entirely unresponsive in certain contexts. I haven’t seen the slow or halting page painting that I think you’re describing.

Have you tried the preview channel app? It’ll install on your Roku along side the released app so you can switch between them. As near as I can tell, it’s the upcoming release, one minor version number greater than the current version.

Yeah, I didn’t explain it very well. I have also had the issue you mention, if I move around navigating within a series too much it locks up. I’ll try to replicate it later, you tip may have sorted that. It’s more the issue that if I, for example, select an episode then scroll across to the next, it will instantly react and change title but take several seconds for any Metadata to load/update. Also starting an episode or film will take a long time. Or basically anything seems to take a lot longer (and that’s outside of the UI changes forcing more clicks to get anywhere :roll_eyes:)

I’ll give the preview a punt, thanks for the heads up. I wouldn’t mind beta testing if they actually paid any attention whatsoever to their customer’s opinions…

Just to confirm, exactly the same issues and lockups using the preview version, cache cleared, rebooted, unplugged, you name it. Laggy loading of metadata and if browsing too quickly the whole app freezes up until quitting to the Roku home screen using the home button on the remote.

Same on Ultra and Roku Express 4k. Utterly useless.
