Rotated Pictures not correctly displayed in Plex Web and Plex Samsung App

I am having this problem too. I have PMS installed on Synology NAS (armv5 processor) and:

  1. Photos are rotated in “File Station” and DS Photo (Synology applications)
  2. Photos are not rotated in PHT and Plex/Web (Win7)
  3. Photos are not rotated in PlexConnect

All my photos are jpg

Problem still exists in Plex 0.9.16.4. It’s pretty useless when half your photos are sideways. :frowning:

Having this issue too. I’m new to Plex and bought monthly Plex pass, in order to see whether it is something for me or not before I buy lifetime pass, but the long time it takes until some employee of Plex answers here makes me think whether this is a good idea at all…

This was a very old issue which should not arise with current cameras and operating systems. I did explain how it arose in my earlier post here and also linked to an external blog page that explained the problem. The issue only arose because I had manually rotated photos that had orientation info within the metdadata - and the only reason I rotated the images manually was because old windows operating systems did not act on the rotation indicator.

This issues still persists and it seems to be a client side (=Samsung App) issue.
The UE55H7000 shows the pictures with the correct rotation, but not the UE78KS0500.
Win/iOS devices also show them with the correct rotation.
PMS is 1.8.1.4139 on QNAP NAS.

Does anyone has any suggestions how to solve that annoyance?
TIA

Same problem here

Looking at this issue now. I understand the complexities of automating picture orientation, but how about if all the technology and settings still lead us astray, couldn’t we just store the picture orientation from within plex itself?

I think the best solution is if the stars aligned and all the pictures showed with the correct orientation right away, but the stars having failed us I’d like to go in and fix them myself.

I use Win10 File Explorer/View to manually rotate photos that show as incorrectly rotated when viewed in Plex (WD MyCloud NAS, Win10 or Amazon Fire). Plex then shows the correct rotation for the photos - but the thumbnails are not correctly rotated. Refreshing the Plex database or Plex metadata doesn’t help. How do I get the thumbnails to show up correctly rotated?

All my photos show correctly in Windows Explorer and in Windows Photos (I used it to rotate them all when needed). Creating my Plex library all those photos are still not oriented correctly… Any fix for this yet?

There was an explanation in the linked posts and web article here Rotated Pictures not correctly displayed in Plex Web and Plex Samsung App

Yes, I read all those. But didn’t find a fix. I appreciate your response to an old issue. I’ve uploaded screenshots from Plex photos, amazon photos, my explorer where the original resides, and from the program Exif Pilot that was recommended. focusing on the pic with the stair rail in front, it looks fine in explorer, but Plex or Amazon won’t display correctly. I’ve messed with Exif Pilot trying to change or delete tags, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

Well, regardless what the issue was, just opening them in Irfanview, saving them at 100% as JPG again keeping the original Exif data, then uploading them to Plex and Amazon displays them correctly now. I’ll just have to keep an eye out for those photos that refuse to rotate correctly and go through that process…

Thanks!

The issue was that if there is Exif Data for rotation but you did do a manual forced rotate edit then the outcome could be wrong and there is nothing that can be done about that.

If rotation is wrong when no editing was done and it shows ok on some plex apps but not other, then i would be happy to have a look with logs provided for the client app and the server together with a zip of the file that is showing wrong one one client but not another

The other area to look into would be if the issue is only on the thumbs views and not when the image is fully displayed in Plex - again plex debug logs and test files would be needed and details of what results with each supported plex client app

and for client apps

I did rotate those images with Windows Explorer function in Windows 10. I rotated some of them with Windows Photos in Win10 also. They would show incorrectly either with thumbnails or full image.

Anyway, like you said, only those old images from cameras before mid 2000’s seem to have the issue, and I don’t have that many of those images.

Thanks for your attention though.
