I’m running Raspberry Pi 3 with stretch 4.9.35-v7+ and have installed Plex media server 0.9.16.4.1911-ee6e505-2~jessie. Hopefully it’s not an issue to have a Jessie plex server on a Stretch OS. I also have v4l-cx231xx-avcore-01.fw installed in /lib/firmware per the Hauppauge instructions. When I try to find devices with Live TV and DVR, it just sits there spinning forever. Nothing ever seems to be found. Do I need to downgrade to Jessie? Or is there something else to do.
That version is outdated. Please update your system with the package manager apt.
You did not really install that 3 year old version. You would not have DVR support. This was added much later. The important package is plexmediaserver-installer, not plexmediaserver. The last one has been empty for years ![]()
Raspbian Stretch is perfect. Please review my official instructions and make sure you did something like this to install PMS:
Then you did fetch the wrong firmware. Please take a look at the following link to get the correct firmware and then compare your kernel logs with the logs in following link. Last remark: you will only have access to one tuner. Hauppauge just pushed the support to the second tuner to upstream Linux 4.17.
https://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-dualHD#Firmware
I reran the instructions that I think I found there. Very little happened.
Apparently, I AM running version 1.13.2.5154 according to the gui. I made the mistake of running dpkg -s plexmediaserver
and that showed version 0.9.16.4.1911-ee6e505-2~jessie.
I ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, uname -r still shows 4.9.35-v7+
I have installed dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw in /lib/firmware and rebooted.
Still getting the spinning wheel with “Looking for compatible devices” when I click Live TV & DVR/Set Up Plex DVR.
A reboot is required to boot the new kernel
Please post the output of sudo dmesg after reboot and of groups plex.
Btw: did you somehow change Plex to run as Linux user pi? You will have to make sure to add your PMS Linux user to the Linux group video.
I tried to do a dist-upgrade but cratered the system. I rebuild with a fresh download. OS is 4.14.34-v7+
Plex server is 1.13.2.5154
firmware is /lib/firmware/dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw
Still the same problem.
I notice that: lsusb |grep Hauppauge
gives: Bus 001 Device 007: ID 2040:826d Hauppauge
where the Hauppage documentation indicates it should be 2040:026d
lsusb -v indicates some minor differences with the Hauppauge documentation, but nothing major that I can see.
I also notice that only one tuner is supported until kernel version 4.17+, Debian Buster isn’t out yet, much less available on Raspian. Is there any hope for dual tuner support soon?
OK. So you rock the US version of this device. So first, the kernel update to 4.11+ was required to make the device available on Linux. Firmware is not required for the US version.
Ignore the usb device id difference. It’s the same for my DualHD.
I have the European version and it is discovered by PMS on my RPi 2 within 10 seconds.
Please post the output of sudo dmesg and groups plex.
Also, please tell us if you do not use our official installation instructions in the forum.
Regarding 4.17+ on the RPi. I won’t bet on official support, soon. I have built my own kernel to enable this. Take a look at the official instructions. The sources for 4.17 are available on the official github RPi linux repo. However, it takes approximately 8 hours to build the kernel on an RPi and it’s an advanced topic. Please ask in the RPi forum for help how to compile your own kernel.

Your dmesg output does not mention the DualHD, at all. Are you sure it is connected to your RPi? Please check the USB cable and the USB connection
Oh. You are correct. The usb device id is a problem
I am afraid the stock 4.14 kernel does not support your OEM version of your DualHD

Yes, you really need a 4.17+ Linux kernel to support this device
Thanks Hauppauge
Are you able to return this device? “Older” DualHD USB sticks will work with one tuner out of the box.
Please ask in the advanced Raspberry Pi forum how to build your own 4.17 Kernel.
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=29&sid=a5b210c10767e0b9405bc307d625434f
I just built the most recent RPi 4.17 kernel for my RPi 2 on my PC and is working very well.
As I have told you, the main doc is this: Kernel building - Raspberry Pi Documentation
To build 4.17, only the first few commands change. The following commands, issued on your RPi, will install 4.17.2 on your RPi. Don’t use these commands on your desktop PC
# install build environment
sudo apt-get install git bc
# no --depth=1
git clone https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux
cd linux
# checkout the current 4.17 kernel
git checkout rpi-4.17.y
# from now on everything is the same
KERNEL=kernel7
make bcm2709_defconfig
make -j4 zImage modules dtbs
sudo make modules_install
sudo cp arch/arm/boot/dts/*.dtb /boot/
sudo cp arch/arm/boot/dts/overlays/*.dtb* /boot/overlays/
sudo cp arch/arm/boot/dts/overlays/README /boot/overlays/
sudo cp arch/arm/boot/zImage /boot/$KERNEL.img
I built the kernel on my i5 Intel and it only took 10 minutes or so (Cross-compiling). If you do not have a Linux desktop PC available it will take hours on your RPi. However, the result will be the same
So it’s really easy.
Btw. Any apt kernel update will restore the upstream kernel and you will have to install the 4.17.2 kernel again.
Thanks for helping shortcut the process. A few notes:
The “no” command wasn’t available and the git branch didn’t work(did depth=1 cause that?). I used
git clone --depth=1 -b rpi-4.17.y https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux
So far, I’ve also had to run
sudo apt-get install bison flex libssl-dev bc
but after that, the comile seems to be going nicely.
It found the DualHD and it streams (haltingly). However, if I go to Live TV & DVR it says “Device not found. Ensure your device is powered on and connected to your network.”. Even though it’s still streaming. Also I’ve read elsewhere that the DualHD shows as 2 devices. I’m only seeing one. Should I be looking elsewhere?
The warning is normal. Only the QuadHD shows as two devices.
I use tvheadend to stream from my DualHD on my RPi 2 to my Shield TV (Kodi), not Plex. That’s working great. I use Plex DVR on my Shield TV PMS to transcode the tvheadend stream from the RPi 2, if necessary.
