Running apps from Plex

Every year or so I try Plex, but there are two things that prevent me from sticking with it: the lack of customization options for the 10 foot UI, and especially the inability to launch another app (in my use case, mostly a gaming frontend). Are there plugins/add-ons/workarounds to expand the functionality of Plex like Kodi enjoys?

On what platform is that (e.g. web app, Plex HTPC, native smart tv apps, Android/Apple TV, Roku, some gaming console…?
What kind of customizations do you have in mind / are you missing?

Like using Plex as app launcher?
If I may ask… why? [edit: not to sound condescending… just trying to understand your use case]

My current HTPC setup is running Kodi on Windows 11 and honestly it works really well. I just figure since I bought a Plex Pass ages ago I would like to get some value from it someday :-P.

For the non-techy in my household Kodi allows me to run everything seamlessly and efficiently without extraneous visual noise (like home elements that can’t be removed or can’t be configured to display the way I’d prefer). So far after tinkering with the current build of Plex over the last couple days I can’t get it to the level of sleek functionality that I have with Kodi— and to be clear, this HTPC just needs to serve movies, tv shows, and music to the household. I don’t do any pirate streaming crap addons that a lot of Kodi users have been known for.

As to app launching, that’s the biggest issue, really. I think everyone could adapt to Plex HTPC usage for media playback, but it’s really nice to be able to run Launchbox (specifically the Big Box interface) directly from Kodi, browse and play games, then exit Big Box and automatically return to Kodi. All seamlessly controllable via a remote, a game controller, or mouse and keyboard. I can think of a boatload of other use cases where it would be handy to execute external apps.

I realize everyone has their use cases, but I always gravitate towards configurability and flexibility.
