The plex server on my nvidia shield shows that it is running but as of today the Nvidia shield will not connect to the server. I get the warning that the Shield Android TV is currently unavailable. Retry connection. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have the exact same problem, just about to give up with both Plex and the shield
I have the same problem. It’s different from the old problem of Plex cutting out intermittently during playback of media. About 10 days ago I noticed my Nvidia Shield PMS was “unavailable” and an update was pending but wouldn’t complete. I tried resetting the Shield, switching the server toggle on/off in Settings, but nothing worked. Eventually I did a factory reset on the Shield and started Plex ok. I rebuilt the Libraries and linked to the media on the attached Seagate hard drive - fortunately undamaged. It worked ok. Then I tried upgrading the Plex App via the Nvidia menu and it crashed again. And it’s totally unusable once more.
I got the Shield last year as my Synology 713+ NAS was just too slow to run PMS properly. Initially, I was impressed with the Shield running PMS - much faster. But now, it desperately needs an update that actually works.
I upgraded my Nvidia Shield 2019 device last night to Experience v8.1.1 with the associated PMS upgrades, and now the service wont run. I’ve done a full restore and think I’ve narrowed it down to using my USB drive. As soon as I move the storage to the external HDD the PMS services stop and Plex crashes. I use the Shield just for PMS so it’s annoying that I loose access to my Plex server until these issues get resolved, if at all.
Count me in! I see my Qnap Nas is still mounted and connected. But it no longer connects to the plex server. There was a system update, for the Shield. I did that hoping it would solve it, but it didn’t.
So I’m trying to redo some things, mainly removing the shield server from plex, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling plex on the Shield.
So back to square one. I’ve turned on the plex media server in the plex app , it’s default name is Android Shield TV. When I’m setting up the Home screen, it no longer says “plex server not available.” I’m now able to select it. Great! However there are no libraries yet. I use a Qnap NAS, so I need to create libraries pointing to those folders. When I go to my plex web interface to create libraries, “Android Shield TV” server should be an option in the drop down, right?
But it’s not… any advice?
Replying to my own question to help others who may have the same issues…
You need to uninstall the Plex Media Server app on the Shield too, which I did, but if you don’t get a start-up screen where it’s introducing you the plex media server for the first time, then you need to keep uninstalling and reinstalling it. You need to get to that screen to know the install is truly fresh. Only then will your plex web interface see the new server, and it too, will walk you through setting up libraries. I set up libraries at the PC because I’m using a NAS.
Honestly, It feels very unscientific how I got it to work again. Just a bunch of trial and error, uninstalling the plex app on the shield, clearing cache, clearing data, re-linking plex account, restarting the shield, uninstalling and reinstalling plex media server, restarting, etc… in no particular order. LOL!
Also on the Plex web interface, I removed the older server that was no longer connecting, and I also deleted the Nvidia Shield as an authorized device. Once you relink the apps, it’ll be authorized again.
All this was to avoid factory resetting the Shield. The libraries have to be rebuilt again though. I will be really upset if it no longer connects again in a few days. We’ll see…
