Running PMS on old MacMini that cannot run new version and cannot access server from ROKU or Amazon Fire

I run PMS on an older Mac Mini (pre 2009) that cannot accept the newer version of PMS (media resides on Western Digital MyBook), which means Roku and Amazon Fire cannot see the server. Rather than buying a new computer I thinking i can run PMS on a Windows machine. Do i simply install PMS on this machine and go from there? Is there a “how to” on what i should do? Not very proficient in the area…sorry!

Simply install it and use the same Plex username and password like you use now.

There is no need to uninstall Plex from the Mac first, btw.

thanks for feedback! Loaded on the windows machine and it works fine as long as the sever/computer is running…this is good when i’m home because i can manage this. However when i’m not home and the kids want to watch Plex it can be an issue. Anyone have a fix around this? Another question…Plex is working great on all devices EXCEPT a ROKU TV, it sees the sever just won’t connect to it…keeps saying “unavailable”.

Are you saying that the computer is switched off at these times?
If that is the case: Since this computer is the Plex server, it must of course be running when someone wants to use Plex.

yeah, that’s what i gathered. Thanks!

Another question…I have about 400 movies on the server, but since moved the server and it now shows i have about 2500!! I have all these “Media Files” (titled “Media 005” through “Media 1350”) and some movie titles of movies i don’t have. Do you know where these are coming from? In the file folder where all the movies are i have folder that just appeared called “Plex Media Server” and it appears to have a ton of metadata in it? I think this is where the files are coming from…can i delete the folder?

It looks like you have set the path of the Plex Server meta data to be the exact same path where you also store your media.
If you delete it, you will lose all your libraries.
Mingling will lead to malfunctioning of Plex.

Move the metadata folder to a location/folder that is not scanned by Plex for media.
Here’s a guide how to do that:
