It would be nice to have the file playtime when looking at the different versions. Currently just displays bitrate and resolution. But if my movie folder has some DVD extras or something, those can get lumped in with the main movie and I just select them through Play Version….
Plex will display local extras in their own section if you name them according to these guidelines: Local Files for Movie Trailers and Extras | Plex Support.
Okay then, how about two versions of the same film with the same bit rate and resolution but one has an extra after credits scene making the runtime 2 minutes and 34 seconds longer.
That would probably be a use case for Multiple Editions (might not be perfect for “just has an extra after-credits scene,” but I also don’t know of any movies that fit that description). There’s an existing feature suggestion for adding more details to the “Play Version” menu though, which might be a better place to cast your vote: More Info in “Play Version” - Feature Suggestions - Plex Forum.
So, does my idea seem sound?
I wasn’t trying to say it’s a bad idea, I was just saying that Plex has separate features for the scenarios you mentioned (so you don’t have to try to find the real movie in a menu of extras). I only use multi-version movies for different versions of the exact same movie (e.g. 1080p vs 4K), so the current info is enough for my use case, but there are at least 230 others who agree with you.
As DTR pointed out – there’s already existing features which cover the actual use cases.
In addition there’s an existing feature suggestion discussing for the play-version modal to display more information – incl. an option to show the duration/runtime of each version (also previously linked by DTR).
Please comment/vote in that thread with regards to having more details displayed in the play-version modal. This will also help us to avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes.
Unless I’m missing some unique aspect of your suggestion I’ll close this thread as a duplicate.
Yes, that sums up my complaint. I ran a search for “play version” to see if there were any posts already but that didn’t come up for some reason. So this is a dupe and can be closed. I up-voted the other post.
