Same trailers over and over?

I’ve enabled trailers for movies, selected all of the options (play from the internet, play unwatched movies from my library etc) and the trailers play before a movie as expected (in my case, 3 trailers before each movie). They also seem to respect the setting where it plays trailers appropriate to the rating (my kids movies play G rated trailers).

However, it plays the same trailers over and over. I’ve seen the Charlie Brown trailer at least thirty times. It plays some neat old ones from time to time, I’m fine with that. But it basically plays two trailers of the same movies every time and one random one.

Is this something others are experiencing?

Latest plex pass version of the server and all players, and has existed for several versions.

Yes I have. When playing internet trailers, the option is new and upcoming and well there aren’t a lot of G rated movies so you will often get the same one (s) over and over. Sometimes, you’ll get none if there aren’t any in the works. I cheat and upped the ratings to PG so so there is more variety for my kids. They are old enough that I’m ok letting them watch at least the trailers for PG.

A great explanation, but I’ve also enabled playing trailers for unwatched movies in my library and there are dozens of G rated trailers there. It seems to play the same New and Upcoming one over and over, and the random ones are coming from my library. I’d hazard a guess that its set to play 1 or 2 from the net and 1 or 2 from my library. Ideally, the algorithm would say “Have I played this before, ok, play something else”

I don’t know how it decides if it will play the upcoming versus local trailer, but your description sounds very possible.

Seems like I’m not the only one having this issue

And I tested with PG and PG-13 movies and have similar experiences, getting the same external trailers over and over, trailers from the library seem to be ok, but kind of defeat the purpose of asking for new and upcoming trailers. Really, I’d prefer behaviour where if they don’t have a new trailer to show me, they just don’t bother.

I’ve reverted to only showing trailers from my own collection until this gets fixed somehow. I get a much wider variety and no repeats yet. I suppose that will only last as long as I have unwatched movies in each rating, but it’s the only thing workable right now.

It’s a sad state of affairs when my own collection has a higher variation than a premium provider of trailers.

i’m giving this a bump because i’ve searched and have found no solution. I believe this is a Plex Pass feature and yet it is not working. I have the same issue as the OP in that I get the exact same trailer that plays every time. I have only 1 trailer set to play and then a pre-roll video. Plex has been great for me so far but little things such as this are also important.

While i have some trailer users here can you confirm this…

With trailers on and having movies in the same library that are stacked versions (encoded at different sizes) that show as a single thumbnail

With trailers off on the client it gives me the choice when I play either through the client GUI directly or if I use the ios app and select a version with the “…” button

With trailers on… the clients GUI both PMP and openPHT… no longer give me the option to select a version

The ios app still allows me to hit the “…” button in the movie and select a version but it does not respect it and usually plays the lower bitrate version instead of the one I select even though the client could direct play either.

Thanks

I’ve been a XBMC/KODI user for years and this Trailer feature worked flawlessly with a variety of upcoming trailers available. I decided to try Plex Pass, in part, because of this feature. To say I’m disappointed in how broken it is in Plex is an understatement, especially since it appears this is not a priority to be fixed. I’ll probably just wait for my Plex subscription to expire and not renew if this is not fixed by then. Not really worth it.
