Samsung TV now connected directly and transcoding everything to SD

Hi all,

Been using Plex for a while. Got myself new Samsung smart TV and was trying to use the app but got a lot of buffering. I gor myself an ethernet splitter so I could directly connect to the Internet to see if that would help and also set up port forwarding on my Eero router as well.

Now I can connect to the app again but instead of buffering it transcodes all the files to SD. I changed subtitles to srt but it’s made absolutely no difference and things I could watch fine on the app when using wifi are now grainy and hard to watch.

I have googled this and tried fiddling with a number of settings and nothing helps. The dash tells me I am playing locally and I turned off relay so it’s not that.

Any thoughts? I am wracking my brain here.

I am not sure what you mean by an Ethernet splitter, would you elaborate please?

Plex will transcode your files if your TV does NOT support the codecs or the parameters that your files are encoded with.

Plex may also transcode the files if there is insufficient bandwidth on your network. This may be caused by the Ethernet splitter ???

Keep in mind, TV’s generally, only support 100Mbps Ethernet connections where their Wifi connections may support slightly higher speeds.

Your TV’s Wifi connection will have Internet access through your router/AP in any case.

In most cases, re-encoding your files to MP4, H.264/AAC using Handbrake or similar, will alleviate the need for Plex to transcode the files. This format is supported by the most number of devices, hence it’s recommendation.

That may not help if your issue is network related though.
