Scan for commercials before recording is complete

Comskip can scan for commercials and create the edl file before the recording is complete. It would be great if Plex enabled parallel scanning for commercials so we can begin skipping commercials immediately. This will also speed up commercial scanning since. it wouldn’t need to wait until the end of the recording.

There should be an option to enable this.

I’m not sure what you mean. The actual scanning for commercials is relatively quick so if you have it set to only ad the markers, there should be very little delay between the end of the recording and when the file is ready to use with the commercial markers.

If you have it set to remove the ads, then the delay comes from cutting up the file and producing the new one. This would not be sped up from what you are asking for.

I am talking about scanning for commercials during the recording. I did this when I used my HDhomerun with Kodi. I could begin viewing a show while recording, and it auto-skipped the commercials before the recording was complete. There is no commercial skipping with plex until the recording is complete.

There is a setting in the comskip.ini to enable live tv scanning live_tv=1. I could get this working myself if I knew where the edl files were stored and if plex would read them while recording.

Ah ok. Unfortunately, when viewing Live TV, you aren’t actually watching the file that is being saved so adding the markers to the file in real time wouldn’t help with being able to skip ads while watching live.

I used to do this with Mediacenter as well. Configuring comskip.ini with live_tv=1 worked like a champ on DVR-MS and WTV files. Is this something that someone has figured out how to do with Plex or do we have to wait for the entire show to record before Plex Commercial Remover runs? I tried changing the comskip.ini file BTW, it does not work on Plex…

Emby does this fine and skips commercials while recording. Plex does not handle in progress recordings well though. You can’t start and stop an in progress recording and resume where you left off unlike the competitor. It records into a .grab folder then moves it to another folder when the recording is complete. Another thing is Plex does not read edl files and instead inputs the commercial skips in the xml file of the recording.

@Deihmos, do you use both Emby and Plex? I was considering Emby but have Plex working pretty well. I really want Channels because of TV Everywhere but am a Roku user and there is no good support for Roku on Channels.

I will usually test Emby every so often. Playback is much better with Emby but Plex wins in UI. I don’t have the out of sync audio and many other issues with Emby.
