"Scan Library Files" no longer detects/recognizes AAC audio files

Server Version#:1.41.4.9463-630c9f557-x86_64_DSM72
Player Version#:N/A
The server suddenly stopped adding albums to my existing Library of AAC audio files, and the “Scan Library Files” button does (did) nothing.
I then tried deleting and recreating the library, but after a long scan process, the library is now completely empty.
I then tried deleting and recreated the database (FAQ 17) with no change.
Any ideas?

Post your server logs, first guess is a permissions issue

Server log files attached. Thanks for the help!
Plex Media Server Logs_2025-02-25_04-07-46.zip (4.7 MB)

Im seeing some elements that dont make sense to me… @ChuckPa Can you take a look at these logs? I dont want to bias your findings with what I think I see yet.

  1. Is this directory, /volume1/music/AAC/ listed in the folders for the music library?

  2. Does user PlexMediaServer have Read permission (apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files checkbox was applied)

Hello ChuckPa,
Folder /volume1/music/AAC/ is included on the media library list.
User PlexMediaServer is listed as having read/write permission of this folder all the way to the individual file level. Not sure why permission is read/write and not read only.
Folder /volume1/music/DSF/, which also inherited its permissions from /volume1/music, appears to have exactly the same permissions and is working normally.
I tried replacing the database file following the instructions in FAQ 17.
I find it odd that the drop-down pick list does not include an owner/user named PlexMediaServer, but does include one named DSPlex. If I try to manually type owner PlexMediaServer, it is rejected. I ultimately reinstated the db file I had previously designated as “damaged”.

I’m thinking some additional history is appropriate here. I hate to put you through this, but here goes…

My Plex server had been serving up AAC and DSF files absolutely problem free until just recently.

A couple weeks ago I did a Plex server update (version unknown) on Synology DSM v7.2.1-69057. Everything seemed to be working normally, until I added some new AAC file, and they wouldn’t add to the library. Nothing had changed recently other than having performed the Plex server update, so I attempted an uninstall and re-install.

That’s when things got really weird.

DSM>Package Center>Plex Media Server icon, when clicked, did not show the typical Plex server info, rather all the data fields were null. AND, the icon shown was for that of Synology AudioStation. When I selected the uninstall option, it uninstalled the AudioStation package.

Then, after a NAS restart, DSM>Package Center>Plex Media Server icon, when clicked, did not show the typical Plex server info, rather all the data fields were null. AND, the icon shown was for that of Synology VideoStation. When I selected the uninstall option, it uninstalled the VideoStation package.

Then, after a NAS restart, DSM>Package Center>Plex Media Server icon, when clicked, did not show the typical Plex server info, rather all the data fields were null. HOWEVER, the icon was now correct. But when I selected the uninstall option it now did absolutely nothing. Plex Media Server was seriously hosed.

Further investigation found that the installed DSM v7.2.1-69057 was indicating as `Up to Date’, but that’s only because it’s the last version that supports VideoStation. With VideoStation uninstalled, I upgraded to the latest DSM v7.2.2-72806, and was able to successfully uninstall and re-install the Plex server version that is currently running.

Which brings me all the way back around to where the problem started, being unable to index any AAC files.

For what it’s worth.

Synology just had a whopping failure in DSM 7.1.1 update 7.

The Plex package, and many like it, were null.

DSM 7.2.2 was not impacted.

Might this be the same as happening to you? If so, DSM 7.2.2 would be the easiest resolution.

After upgrading, you’ll need recheck / reapply permissions to PlexMediaServer

It’s quite possible I was running DSM 7.1.1 update 7 when I did the Plex server update which ultimately got all f’d up.

I did update to DSM 7.2.2 and re-install the latest Plex server package. But that’s the configuration I’m currently having the problem with.

Do you think a complete and total uninstall/re-install of Plex server might fix the problem?

ChuckPa,
I performed an uninstall and deleted the shared PlexMediaServer folder, then performed a fresh install. It appears that the problem has been resolved, and everything is now working properly.

Kind regards and thank you for your help!

Glad you’ve resolved it. Strange you needed a cold restart.
