Scan not finding movies in sub folders. Even after specifying sub folder as library

When I first scanned, with a new server I installed today, it picked up about 80% of my movies titles. I selected one sub folder off of the library folder which does not show up with any files in it (there are valid files) and ran the movies in it. I then converted the avi’s to mp4 and specified the fully specified folder name into the library scan with no results. It still shows the directory as part of the library but states there are no items in this library.

Please elaborate more on for folder structure and keep the folder nesting in mind:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200381023-naming-movie-files/

It sounds as though you use an “illegal” sub-nesting of movie folders.

Structure off of root
/movies (this level and some sub levels are picked up)
/Dear Murderer Season 1 (2017)ONE (directory only picked up)
/Dear.Murderer.S01E01.avi (not picked up)
/Dear.Murderer.S01E01.mp4 (not picked up)

That seems more like TV Series than Movies. Regardless, your file naming is all over the place, follow the naming convention outlined in the article:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220687-naming-series-season-based-tv-shows/

Episodes of a TV show won’t show up in a ‘Movies’ library and vice versa.

OK. If they arbitrarily ignore videos, what do I do with a miniseries? TV since there are more than one even though the titles distinctly identify them?

Miniseries is in most cases a tv show, nonetheless.
If it appears on TheTVDB, then add it as a tv show.

Here’s an idea. Add everything I have on disk and let me define my videos anyway I like. I watch things that most people don’t. Since they wouldn’t be added to your “tv” db, that doesn’t necessarily make them movies. If something is played on the small screen first and is a single episode that doesn’t necessarily define them as “tv” no matter what the db master might say.

You can do that. Create a library of the type ‘Other Videos’.

Thank you. That will work.

I’m getting most of my movies now, however, I’m not getting 50% of my tv shows. More naming conventions?

\Agatha Christie Poirot

\S01

\Agatha_Christies_Poirot_S01E01_x265_720p_BluRay_30nama_30NAMA.mkv

\Agatha_Christies_Poirot_S01E02_x265_720p_BluRay_30nama_30NAMA.mkv

\S02

Looks like your series folder is missing the S on Christies.

If that doesn’t fix it, you can just manually fix the match by clicking the three dots and choosing Fix Match. If you can get it to show up by title, you can use the TVDB Series ID number, which is 76133, just put it in the Title field and hit Search.

What also always helps is the year of the first airing in the title (can be found at thetvdb), especially if there are several hits like in this case:

\Agatha Christies Poirot (1989)

This still doesn’t match the guidelines. It is best to rename everything inline with the below in order for you to have a hassle free experience with Plex.

TV Shows/ShowName/Season XX/ShowName – sXXeYY – Optional_Info.ext

/TV Shows
   /Grey's Anatomy
      /Season 01
         Grey's Anatomy - s01e01.avi
         Grey's Anatomy - s01e02 - The First Cut is the Deepest.avi
         Grey's Anatomy - s01e03.mp4
      /Season 02
         Grey's Anatomy - s02e01.avi
         Grey's Anatomy - s02e02.mkv
         Grey's Anatomy - s02e03.m4v

So yes, it is a naming issue. Follow the guides and use TheTVDB for proper show names.

What part of idiotic are guidelines which enforce arbitrary and capricious rules by making the software not work. Why not add the damn files and then don’t lookup or add any metadata when the files don’t adhere to your “rules”.

Those rules make it easier for the developers to create algorithms to be able to get the proper data from the filenames to be able to match it with the metadata agent.

You are absolutely allowed to follow your own naming convention and folder structure. However, if that is what is causing issues and you refuse to correct it, then you are on your own to get it to work.

I myself differ slightly from the guidelines, however it is close enough that Plex is able to do what it is supposed to. While it would suck for me, if there was a change where my slight difference caused Plex to not be able to get the correct data, I would change all my files and manually update the database (because I’ve done this in the past and am comfortable doing it) to correct the issue.

If you want the files to be added and no metadata to be loaded then use the Other Videos library as @OttoKerner mentioned and you replied to and be done with it. That uses the Personal Media agent by default which shouldn’t be scraping external metadata so you’ll have to populate it all on your own.
