Scanner for Youtube-dl

Since youtube is slow and unreliable on my network, as well as several other reasons, I want to host HD downloaded youtube files on my lan. I use youtube-dl to keep playlists up to date.

I have tried home video and TV with all sorts of naming formats like

Playlist Name - S01EXX - Video title.mp4

Plex never even infers the video title based on the filename.

I can even put these in a 01 - youtubeid.mp4 format so that a scanner would have access to the id

Is there a scanner that will load metadata from youtube? This would help so much.

I just started doing the same thing to archive some of my favorite youtube channels. It drove me nuts because some of the earlier videos I downloaded with youtube-dl showed the correct title and the rest were showing E01, E02, etc. After a bit of head scratching I realized on the early ones I included the --add-metadata switch. If the title is in the mp4 tag, plex will use it.

Now if I could only get plex to read the description file youtube-dl can write and use it as the plot...

I try to create a scrapper with the youtube-dl script but i still get errors wit bad file descriptor. Can someone give me a hint how i can use the lib with plex correct?

Try the Extended Metadata plugin here: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/83440-rel-extended-personal-media-shows-agent/

Install both the scanner and Agent

It will then pick up the .description files if you use something to rename them to .summary.

It's what I've been doing, it will also assign and episode number based on a date.

This is the problem that keeps me away from Plex. Isn’t there a scanner that simply uses the filename if no metadata?

Yes, the above scanner I posted will. It takes the title from the file name anyway. You can also use youtube-dl to embed the meta data which that extended scanner will also pick up, thus not needing the description files.
