Scheduled Recordings Fail on Synology DS118

Server Version#: 1.13.3.146
Player Version#:

Hi - I am a new Plex user. Just bought Synology DS118 NAS and Nvidia Shield. I’ve set up PMS on the NAS, and am just using the Shield as a client (PMS on Shield is disabled). Maybe that is not the way to go - so would appreciate advice if that is the wrong approach.

At any rate, the current setup is sort of working, but has significant problems. I feel like I’m missing something fundamental.

  1. If I program a show in advance, everything appears to be set up fine. But when the program begins, a warning message flashes that the recording failed because it did not have write permission to the destination.

  2. I can, however, successfully record to the Synology NAS IF the Nvidia Shield is on AND I have begun watching the show.

  3. Strangest part - or maybe most helpful for figuring out what is happening! - I set up the SNF game to record last night. At the start of the broadcast, got the “recording failed” error. Canceled the recording over the web interface, and started the recording again over the web interface / program guide. The recording progress circle came up, and it looked like it was recording just fine. But it wasn’t. The recording starts half way through the first quarter, which is when I actually turned the game on. There was no “start at the beginning” option, and now that the recording is complete I have confirmed that the recording starts half way through the first quarter.

Thanks for any help!

Hello - Thank you very much for your reply! It was the folder permissions issue. This is also my first NAS / experience w/ DSM, and I hadn’t yet figured out how to check or assign folder permissions for each user - which I now know is really easy through the DSM Control Panel. All of my folders were “shared” but Plex didn’t have R/W permission, and for whatever reason the Admin user was defaulted to Disabled.

Everything is working perfectly now, and there was no need to move recordings afterward.

Thank you very much for your time and help!
