So for the longest time now, searching subtitles has refused to work for me. Ether is doesn’t find anything, or it fails to download what it finds.
When going to find some subs manually, you know, with a web browser and stuff, I discovered that opensubtitles.org no longer existed, and was also actively being walled of by ISP, probably some security measure. So I went into my firewall and put in opensubtitles.org to point to opensubtitles.com.
Lo and behold, suddenly sub search in plex started working, coincidence? Or does someone need to update some url somewhere?
I put the post in here, cause I don’t know if the sub search is affecting server, client or both.
It still works, not sure why your ISP would block it. According to opensubtitles they are not discontinuing .org til the end of 2023. I know it is on the list of things to do but i do not have an ETA.
Ok, so that means since my isp actively blocks deprecated urls, subs are not working in plex. Which means half the country has non working plex sub search (yes, it’s a very common ips here, and many users of the server complain that subs are not working.
So it should resolve itself before end of 2023 than? =) Could you possible aim for Q1? I mean if it’s just changing .org to .com, it should be a quick fix?
Thanks for responding and confirming anyway. Is this a server side or client side issue, or both? How does it work? There is two pars, right? Search and Download. is it all client side, or does the server do any of it?
Plex client is clearly using different urls for searches and downloads; as search does work, often after adjusting the search term, but downloads consistently fails.
Looking closer it may well be my ISP is also doing something stupid as I get 127.0.0.1 back for the .org domain, but .com works - but regardless of what stupid stuff my ISP is doing Plex isnt much better with not using the same url for both searching and downloading imho - and the response to this and other issues is pretty much the reason I’ve given up on reporting problems.
Actually it seems like every isp in the country blocks dns requests for opensubtitles.org. It may be related to a court ruling for a certain pirat website that was taken down, and opensubtitles.org was included in the dns blockage due to some affiliation on hosts level or something along that line. So more or less no subtitles support in Norway until you update plex to .com. Unless changing to openDNS or something (which to be honest, is above the skill level for most users of my server =) )
