Secure Connection in Local Network Possible?

Hi there!

I am running a Plex server on my Mac Mini and use clients on Apple TV 4, iOS, PS4 and Fire TV, all of them in my local network and some of them, when I am remote. I have set up my server to prefer secure connection.

Several weeks ago all clients except the iOS and Apple TV 4 clients refused to use the local connection to my server and only used the remote (secure) connection. I found a setting in the PS4 and Fire TV (Android) app to accept insecure connections in the local network, but the default setting is to only accept secure connections (I did not find such setting in the iOS/AppleTV apps).

So my question is, when “accept secure connections only” is default in the client apps, how do I set up my server to enable secure connections within my local network?

The server version is 1.5.0.3501 on macOS.

Regards,
Marcus

Depends on your router.

Ok, I own a FritzBox cable router, and I followed tose instructions: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/165770/https-verbindung-zu-pms-0-9-12-3-mit-fritzbox-dns-rebind-schutz

But secure nearby connections still don’t work, as soon as I require secure connections in the clients, my local server is listed as “remote” and not “nearby” anymore.

Try using Google’s DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4) instead those of your ISPs.

Secure Connections rely on name resolution of the plex.direct domain. Many ISPs DNS servers appear to have a problem with the .direct TLD.

Well, unfortunately this is not possible with my router, it is provided by my ISP (Kabel Deutschland) and I cannot change this configuration. But thank you for your help!

You could change the DNS entries on your server, computers and devices used to access Plex if you can’t do it at the router level.

While this could work on the server and pc clients, it may present a challenge to set on those ‘smaller’ clients like ChromeStick etc.

Yep, it’s a whole lot easy to change it in one place on the router but this isn’t always possible. So when you can’t do it the easy way, then it’s the hardway or no way.

Not the most ideal solution, but a solution that “may” work.

The irony is that people who run DNS servers aren’t fully supporting correctly all the top level domains!

Agreed. On top of that, you may get redirected when resolution of a domain name fails. Officially they call it ‘customer service’, but in reality it’s an additional revenue stream.
