Securing PMS

Please point me the right direction if this was discussed anywhere, but:
Is there a way to secure the PMS installed on Synology with a password? Seems like if I use an user and setup a PIN, it requires just the PIN which is no security at all. My goal is to prevent anyone on the same network to access and alter the settings on my PMS and run the server on LAN with no internet connection.

Thank you!

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173-7000

That PIN only works in the context of “managed users” – this means users which belong to your account. For them to be able to access your server, you first need to sign them in with your account before they’ll be able to switch accounts using only a PIN.

If you experience other users in your home network accessing your server you might review Settings > [Server Name] > Network > List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth. You can use this option to allow access to your server from certain networks / IPs without authentication – which can be helpful under certain circumstances.

Thank you for such a quick reply. So do I get it right there is no local authentication possible? IP list is defintely helpful, but not the solution I am looking for.

The IP/network list is aiming at a different use case IMO.
I suppose it’s kind of a dance on the edge of a sword situation… you usually use manage users for users in your home – e.g. your kids or spouse. You want to handle your kids as managed users as that gives you more control as for what online sources they can see or not. If your kids get to the point that they start attacking your admin account it might be time to give them their own regular accounts… you can still fully control what they see from your server (though they’ll be able to control online sources on their own) while they’re no longer running under your own account.

I’ve seen some users creating a dedicated managed user for themselves (other than the admin account). This way their kids won’t have full admin access to the server if they watch you typing the PIN.

If you have other people outside your close family in your home network you might want to push them to get their own accounts. You can still invite them to be a member of your “Plex Home” – though they’ll have no access for admin tasks on your server (unless you configured your entire network to be an auth-free zone (see settings link above).

Thank you for your time and energy to explain this to me. Well, its not what I was hoping for, so I will have to fiddle more around to get security on the level I am comfortable with.
