Seeing HTTP 401 on attempting to manually add server connection

Server Version#: 4.66.1
Player Version#: 7.26 (latest)

I’ve been trying a few days to get my iOS client to remotely connect to a manually added server connection (via the public IP), but get Error Code: 401 on each attempt. Everything looks fine, I’ve tried much of what I’ve seen suggested in forums. What I see working:

  • Remote Access is setup in PMS
  • TCP Port forwarding is setup on external and internet routers
  • CanYouSeeMe.org test works
  • Logs show my request hitting PMS both externally (wifi off/cell data) and internally (wifi on), still returns an HTTP401.
  • Setting up a LOCAL service works and I’m autologged into my local server connection.
  • I don’t think I need PnP since I’m manually port forwarding, but even with it on it wasn’t working.
  • I’m port forwarding on both the ISP router and my internal router to my Plex server so double NAT shouldn’t be a problem?

One thing I do see is some requests like “GET /media/providers” return an HTTP200 while “GET /” (associated with the manual server connection attempt) returns the HTTP401.

Other details:

  • VMWare instances running my internal router and servers
  • Using Untangle for my internal router.

I may have had a misunderstanding about what remote access actually does. Apparently, I can access my server without using the advanced manual server connection feature. Looks like everything is working as expected, better in fact.
