I have had nothing but issues with plex. When it works great I love it. But I feel I spend more time troubleshooting random issues (that often appear and reappear regardless of what I do) than I do watching my media. One of my hard drives was giving me issues so I removed it. Plex had on occasion deigned to see it and my other hard drive. Once I removed it - nope couldn’t find the server no matter what I tried. My server is on the computer I am trying to launch from at the moment.
In control panel it shows it is installed but when I launch it keeps telling me I need to download Plex media server. I have done so a couple of times, uninstalling and reinstalling. I am ready to cancel my membership as I am at my wits end with this.
No VPN, disabled avast, etc. So far nothing is making a difference. All other software is running fine, I just installed a couple of apps to see if they would have problems but no.
Help?
Hello there.
You’ll need to provide more details. You say Control Panel so you must mean Windows. Was Plex installed on that drive you took out? Or did you have Plex’s AppData folder moved to that drive. These will definitely make PMS not work.
Yes windows. Windows 10. It had been installed on both previously. Why won’t reinstalling it on the one drive work?
Windows makes entries in the registry when you install Plex Media Server. One of them is where to look for your database. If that location can’t be reached, PMS doesn’t work. You can either nuke everything and start over or manually edit the registry and change any paths to a valid location. Here are instructions to start over. https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201941078-Uninstall-Plex-Media-Server
Thank you MovieFan.Plex. I had 3 drives. One small one that just has the operating system and a few files. Then I had two drives of media. Plex worked sporradically, and I could never figure out what it’s problem was. However when I removed the one drive of media it then couldn’t find the other. So I uninstalled it (wouldn’t that include the app data from both the small drive, ie program files, and from the other media drive? I have looked in my registry but I need to figure that out.
I can’t find anything left to manually remove (other than the registry). But when I try to install it keeps telling me to install it.
Update - I deleted the registry and it still doesn’t recognize that I have reinstalled it.
Did you delete the register after deleting the program from control panel?
You then reinstalled PMS. At the end of the install it should have asked you to launch PMS. If you deleted PMS correctly, a web browser should have launched with a setup wizard. Did you see this?
If not, you must have loaded the web browser manually. What address did you use?
I deleted the program using Control Panel. Then I deleted the registry and then reinstalled. After a computer reboot it worked. However it can’t seem to see any of my media, in a drive it didn’t have an issue with. (so it is not a formatting issue with the media)
Did the mapping to the drive letter change when you removed the other drive?
