Separate Playlist section on Home Screen like in Kodi?

Is there a chance there will be a feature like in Kodi that makes it possible to have a Playlist as a section on the home screen? That way you could make a “Watchlist” section, or a section with mixed content, like movie/tv show documentaries for example.

Is this possible?

OpenPHT already has Playlist in Home Screen, see below:

I don’t think that’s what he means…

I believe the OP is referring to Smart Playlists as home screen items.

“Is there a chance there will be a feature like in Kodi that makes it possible to have a Playlist as a section on the home screen?”

I think he was quite specific!

Hey guys,

I know there is a playlist section, but what i meant was what @hstamas said, like the smart playlists in kodi. So each playlist as a separate section on the home menu…

That’s not going to happen in the foreseeable future.

For starters I should say that I agree with what @NedtheNerd said.
This is not likely ever to be implemented. And in my opinion it shouldn’t be.

I really don’t see much difference between having individual playlists in the ‘real’ main menu at the left side of the screen, or having a ‘Playlists’ entry in that menu, with the individual playlists available both in the ‘On Deck’ fanout list in the right side of the screen and by entering the ‘Playlists’ section. To my mind the present implementation is a more flexible method, allowing for practical use of a much greater number of playlists.

The first method would not allow any quicker access to the individual playlists, except if you want to access one beyond the limit of what the ‘On Deck’ fanout shows without sidescroll. And if you were to add that many separate playlist entries to the ‘real’ main menu on the left, you’d have to scroll vertically almost every time you wanted anything else than the last used playlist. So I really think such an implementation would be much worse than what we have now.

In my opinion a more useful change in regard to playlists would be to add some more options to the context menu we get for a selected playlist, so that different modes of playback (resume, restart (straight, shuffled, looped), etc) could be chosen directly from the context menu, without having to open a playlist track listing first. But that can be implemented equally well for a playlist selected in an ‘On Deck’ fanout, as for one selected as a separate main menu entry.

Thnx for you answer.
But how about a “Watchlist” section?
So like the “Favourites” in Xbmc/Kodi?
Would be nice to add stuff to it with an option in the context menu.
Is this something you are willing to consider?

But aren’t we talking about smart playlists like in Kodi? A mechanism to filter your videos based on all kinds of different criteria (genre, actor, last played etc.) and present the results as a home screen menu item? For example, in Kodi, I have a smart playlist that only displays science fiction movies (filtered by genre). I then have a main menu item called as Sci-Fi that points to this smart playlist where I can instantly access only science fiction movies. As far as I can see, OpenPHT has no such corresponding feature?

@hstamas:
You are correct in that OpenPHT has nothing like that, and neither has any other Plex client.

I don’t see how something like that can be implemented in a Plex client without first adding support for it in the PMS server. That’s the biggest difference between Kodi and any Plex client, as the clients rely on a server to handle the full media database, and deliver selections from it to the clients as needed. Kodi on the other hand is a stand-alone application with direct local access to all databases for its media libraries. Both of these two approaches have both advantages and disadvantages.

If/when such ‘smart playlists’ are implemented for PMS, with some API functions for defining such playlists and their filter methods, then use of that feature can be implemented for OpenPHT and other Plex clients.

But even then I would not prefer to have each such playlist linked directly to the main menu, as that would quickly lead to it being greatly overcrowded, and having to scroll vertically in the main menu all the time.
So I think it would be far more efficient to access such smart playlist links through an ‘On Deck’ fanout specific for them.

This function is already there, filter movies by genre, create playlist from filtered list, playlist created, what’s the problem, except they are listed in ‘Playlists’ on the Home Screen, as @dlanor says, if you have 50+ such playlists for movies and TV shows then there would be more scrolling and key presses than in Plex Media Player and look at the number of complaints about that!!

If you really want individual playlists on the Home Screen then any skinner should be able to provide an option for this within their skin, look at the number of such options in Plex Black Edition by @DeadEyeFlint

I think the ‘smart playlists’ @hstamas spoke of in reference to Kodi work differently, so that new media matching the configured filters will be added automatically to the matching playlists as these media are added to the library. That’s why I said that it would require PMS server changes to implement this kind of thing at all.

So it’s not just that he wants individual playlists in ‘Home Screen’, which we could do (but shouldn’t).
But he also wants a kind of playlist that has never been implemented for PMS, and which we can’t do without such support in PMS.

There are a number of feature requests for smart playlists in relation to PMS, suggest the OP looks there and ‘Likes’ any he feels appropriate, as dlanor says, that’s the only way to get it implemented.

Ok guys, thnx for your replies anyway.
Right now i have something similair in Nox, by editing some lines in a config file.
Perhaps in the future it will get supported in PMS, who knows!

Is there a way for OpenPHT to access the ‘Discover’ lists that PMP, iOS, Xbox use on the homescreen ?

It’d be great for skinners to hook into some of the these lists … ( like global recentlyAdded TV/Movies, global onDeck etc … )
