Serious bug: Hours of work wasted this week now because suddenly Plex overrides all my customization when updating metadata

Server Version#: 4.66.1

All I did was add an empty new folder (bought new drive) to my Movie library and Plex started a scan of the library on its own and just overwrote ALL changes I’ve been doing to sorting orders and posters images past week. That’s at least 8 hours of work, just wasted like that.

I’ve used Plex for many, many years and been a paying user, but the Plex experience is just getting worse and worse. I’m so upset that I now have to redo this AGAIN, and I don’t know if this will happen once again when I add a new folder.

This must be a serious bug with Plex.

I even stopped the scan but 5 min later it started it again, and just kept on removing ALL customization I have done.

If you want to insure Plex does not make changes, you need to lock the fields. Normally this is done automatically if you manually change a field. This issue normally happens when Plex detects that a movies/folders/drive location is deleted, when it detects the movie again it adds it back as a new movie. I suspect that when you added the new drive something happened to the original linking. I had a similar issue when I converted some of my SD movies from various formats to x.265. All the converted movies were removed from my collections and all these movies were reset as a new movie that was just added. Apparently after the conversion, the old movies was deleted and the converted one was copied over triggered the rescan of the movie.

Well that’s the point. I didn’t do anything else then add a new empty folder on the new drive to the library and it started a rescan and also reset my locked fields. I didn’t delete or add any new movies, only thing was the addition of the new folder.

I cannot say anything else that this seems to be a bug. The folder I created had the exact same name as one of the folders on another drive in the same library. Maybe that’s why :man_shrugging:

But it didn’t just reset the metadata on the files in those folders but the whole library. (I have separate folders for 1080p, 4K and 4K HDR.)

I can’t help with sorting order etc…
But as far as posters are concerned I would never trust the upload method in Plex.
By far the safest way is to store your carefully curated posters alongside the media.

I do full scans every day and it doesn’t do anything unless the scanner is somehow changed.

Unless you choose refresh metadata lol.
