Locked Metadata keeps changing

Server Version#: 1.13.8.5388
Player Version#: Web client 3.67.1

I’m having issues with locked metadata being changed.

I have downloaded a bunch of Grateful Dead concerts from YouTube. The files are all mp4. I have named them with in the following fashion:
Grateful Dead (YYYY-MM-DD) - City, State, Venue

When Plex loads them into the server, it pulls the metadata from somewhere. I assume that it’s pulling from somewhere in the file. So, I go into each file in Plex and edit it.

I change the title, sort title and originally available date.

Title: Grateful Dead (YYYY-MM-DD) - City, State, Venue
Sort Title: Grateful Dead (YYYY-MM-DD) - City, State, Venue
Originally available: YYYY-MM-DD

Each field is locked as I edit it. I close my browser.

Next time I open it, several of the titles are changed.

It appears to me that this is not functioning as it should. Once I lock those fields, they should not change unless I unlock them.

Can we please resolve this?

I have changed the titles on nearly 50 files a dozen times today.

Did you hit save?

Yes. I save it. I go back into it and verify everything is correct. Then I wsit and it changes. I don’t know where it’s getting it’s data from, because I’ve cleared the metadata from the file with properties and reset the title and it’s still pulling bad data.

I’m frustrated.

Ok, had to ask. Can you grab the current XML for a movie that you can reliably recreate this with? One that you’ve changed the data for. Then do whatever you normally do then after you notice the data has changed, grab the XML again and the entire PMS logs. Post all of that and I’ll take a look.

Sure. Please tell me how to find the files you are looking for and I’ll be glad to provide them for you.

Sorry. I’ve never delved into the details of how Plex works.

for the xml, use Plex Web, move mouse over the movie poster, click on the …, select Get Info, then select View XML, save the result to a plain text file. For logs, use Plex Web, goto Settings \ Server \ Help \ Download Logs.

Thanks for the assist.

Here’s the XML from a file and the logs.

Your file is unmatched. It appears that your library is used for storing non-movie videos, but you chose to use the Movie library type. PMS is trying to match your videos to a regular movie, but this won’t work. I’m not entirely sure why the metadata is changing. As long as the file is still unmatched, it shouldn’t change. I’ll have to look into this some more.

To prevent this i the future, edit your library to use the “Personal Media” agent. That will prevent new items being added from being labeled as unmatched. For your existing items, you will need to do a manual match but in the search field set the agent to “Personal Media”. Now it won’t try to match. You will need to do this every file.

If the above is too much work, an alternative would be to recreate your library and choosing the “Other Video” category instead of “Movie”.

Thanks for that. I will create a personal media folder, but, with that said, the lock should be binding. Can we look into fixing that?

For the most part, I love plex. I have a 20 TB library, and just added another 8 TB of space to it.

So… I have created a Personal Media library. I have added my folders and copied 102 files of either MKV or MP4 types. Of the 102 files in my folders, only 62 are detected and listed in my Plex library. Scan Library Files does not find the missing files.

Any thoughts?

On the positive side, the files that are showing are maintaining the integrity of the saved Metadata

Edit your library and look under the advanced tab. What is shown for the scanner? Another thing to look for, look at the library, then at the top change the view type of “All” to “Duplicates”, do you get any results.

This is an issue in PMS since many years and no solution has been provided so far. However, I finally found a work-around.

Basically, this has to do with entrees in your database being matched or not.

I noticed that PMS only changes metadata for files which are not matched. Although in many cases the movies are available on IMDB, they can’t be matched through the PMS-agents. Even if the structure of your filename as well as the metadata of your file is correct, PMS will retrieve different information from god knows which location. PMS will do this whenever you run a library scan, even if the fields are locked.
If, for whatever reason, it’s not possible to match your PMS-entry via the PMS-agents, proceed as follows:

  1. Complete all required fields and lock them.
  2. Don’t bother about the artwork yet, as PMS will delete manual entrees anyway.
  3. Save Changes.
  4. Click match.
  5. Go to search options.
  6. As agent choose Personal Media.
  7. Click search.
  8. Only one option will be suggested: a local one. Select it and save.
  9. Last thing to do is to update the artwork and save your changes.

Since I started working this way, and after numerous library scans, I never faced the issue of locked files being altered.

Thanks. I have actually moved all my un matchables to a new library and set them up using the personal agent. This has resolved my issue.
