Server Alternatives help

Hi all
I 'm using my PC as a Plex server with a 5TB External HDD connected. I watch movies etc on my Smart TV which has the Plex app installed, through my home network.

I’d like to buy a new HDD and copy the contents to give to my parents, who aren’t very tech savvy. I’d like to know whats the best/easiest way for them to watch the content on their TV? They don’t have a PC, just an iMAC and iPads. They could plug the HDD directly to the TV, but they wouldn’t get all the nice metedata and covers which Plex shows. Any ideas on what the best solution is?

My current thinking is buy any small cheap laptop and attach the HDD to it. The other thing which looked good was a WD Live TV box, but they seem to be really hard to get hold of/

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Any reason to not just share your server with your parents even if that involves purchasing them a client device to attach to their TV (assuming they don’t already have a Smart TV with the app available.)

What you are planning will not work at least not within the Plex infrastructure as far as I’m aware.

Thanks for the response. I live in a different house so can’t share my own server.

If they bought a cheap laptop, and plugged the external HDD into it, surely that would just be the same set up that i have in my own home? They can just install the plex app to their smart TV like i have. Or am i missing something

Yes you can. That’s the whole idea of Plex. Just in the same way that you can access the media on your server when away from home.
It just needs to be always on.

ah ok, i had no idea that was possible. I’m pretty new to Plex myself. I have no idea how that would work, but i’ll do some research. Thanks again!

No worries we were all new to Plex once. On mobile so difficult to link.
But essentially create your parents an account.
Look up how to set up port forwarding for Plex via your router. (Remote access)
Share your server to the account you created.

There’s plenty of guides available. Hopefully someone not on mobile can give you some links.
