Server having issues streaming on local network

Hey there I’m having issues streaming any shows above 1080p on my Plex. I have to manually drop the quality for the stream to be seamless.

My server specs are:
AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT
RTX 3060TI
64GB - 3200Mhz RAM

My TV is hardwired to the same router as the Plex Media server. Any show that I’m trying to play at the moment has significant buffering and jittering unless I drop it from 4k or 1080p down to 720 or even sometimes 360p.

I have Hardware Transcoding enabled… Any settings I should check to fix this issue? This WAS working fine 2 server updates ago.

I have noticed the same. Never had an issue now I am having to change down to 720p 4Mbps to get smooth playback. I’ve changed the Ethernet switch out and checked various things. No change. I did notice in the dashboard, that it seemed to be trying play at 10Gbps but my LAN setup is max 1Gbps. Its almost like the network speed wasn’t being detected correctly.

I’ll come back when I can get all the server and Roku client details together.

Well I have tried rolling back the server to Version 1.41.0.8994 and it hasn’t made any difference. What I did notice was that in the server dashboard the network flow just stops. The data rate literally drops to zero. I’m next going to bring the PMS upto latest and see if the “Home Streaming” setting under Quality might be a factor.

Well after trying lots of things and wasting a ton of time I cannot come up with anything on the PMS running on Windows being the issue. I believe it may be down the the client device/app. In my case the problems only show up on Roku devices. If I play the same files on a Fire TV Plex app (Android TV Plex app) I notice that there is no issue but also there’s no transcoding going on. On the Roku’s I see the video being transcoded from 1080i MPEG2 to 1080p h264 - the audio is direct stream or on a different Roku its AC3 5.1 transcoding to AAC.

The one thing I found on the main Roku I use that helps was to change in the Plex app itself on Roku under Video > Local Quality I changed from “Original” to 20Mbps 4K. After doing this my problem recordings (local PBS Channel) would have a single buffer hiccup some when in the first couple of mins but afterwards play normally without an issue. When looking on the PMS Dashboard I could see the file playing now said 20Mbps on the local IP vs 10Gbps when the setting was on “Original”.

Maybe something has changed on the server that the Roku doesn’t like but I can’t find anything to change that works. It seems weird that the issue was also linked to the PBS recordings whereas I wasn’t having issues say with NBC.

I will see if anything changes but just too many variables other than it seems to be related for me to Roku devices and their ever quirky behavior.
