I’ve setup Plex Server on NVIDIA Shield TV 2018. The server works good. It serves the content and does transcoding at a high rate (which was the reason of using this box vs my old QNAP NAS). Thru this server I can play both Full HD and 4K content in both direct play and transcoding modes. However, the “sync” capability doesn’t work for the 4K content. It works like a charm for the 1080p content though.
When I request a 4K movie to be synced I get:
- On device: “There is an error with this item”.
- On server:
- Nothing in the logs. Even when verbose and debug logging is enabled.
- On the “sync” tab the item is shown with an exclamation symbol and status “Waiting to be converted”. It never converts.
I tried to set up a temporary transcoding location on NAS instead of using the devices storage. Just in case it’s a storage limit issue. It didn’t help.
The sync capability was the only reason why I bought the pass. We frequently leave the country, so having some kid’s content cached on the mobile is a very useful feature to me. Before this, I was running Plex Server on QNAP NAS. It was working just fine, including the 4K content sync, except it would take eternity to get a 4K movie synced. I never had it done to completion there, but at least it wasn’t failing.
What do I miss? Is there anything special about syching of 4K content on SHIELD?
