Server on Win11, some libraries come from a NAS. Others from the local SSD of the Win 11 server. First generation of metadata was fine.
However, the NAS is not constantly on. Will there be a problem? It is clear that I can not watch the “NAS” movies while this is unavailable, but will the metadata remain? Or will the metadata be deleted (NASS off) and re-created (NAS on) over and over again when I switch on the NAS?
You need to disable “Empty trash automatically after every scan” in
Settings -[server] - Library
and keep it so.
If you have items stored on the NAS and the local server within in the same library, you will not be able to delete any items, as long as the NAS is unavailable/off.
With another server (Kodi) I did have the issue, that whenever the NAS was unavailable Kodi tried to delete all metadata (which was not my intention), and afterwards recreated them again as soon as the NAS was online again (causing hanging as this was a larger task).
I have an archive on NAS, but the newer movies on the local SSD. I want Plex to keep the metadata, refresh what it needs to refresh whenever the NAS is online, and otherwise leave the metadata alone.
Again, it is totally clear I cannot access those movies while the NAS is offline, but I want to see metadata. So basically I’d like to have a catalog of the NAS, which I will switch on when needed.
So currently the settings is on, but the metadata seem to survive switching off the NAS (as I want it to be). If I run in trouble, I will untick this one. I just want o make sure it is generally working before I invest more time into PLEX.
Untick it now. Leaving it on can have other unintended side effects – particularly if you allow your NAS to spin down the hard drive platters when idle.
You can do that, with the above checkbox cleared.
For your use case, I’d recommend creating separate libraries for the “current” and the “archived” videos.
