Server settings are unavailable

Windows 10 here - brand new machine updated to the ‘Windows 10 - November Update’.

Had PLEX running for about 2 years. Never had this problem before.

Now I am getting the ‘Server Settings Unavailable’ error, after the browser has been trying to load the settings page for approx 20 seconds.

My Windows 10 PC without the November update is running perfectly. Cannot understand it.

150MB Broadband connection, all wired in with Ethernet cables, no firewalls, not an antivirus software problem.

Have uninstalled PMS and reinstalled, restated the PC many times but the problem continues.

Arrrrggghhh!!!

Which url are you accessing Plex web app through ?

127.0.0.1:32400/web
localhost:32400/web
plex.tv/web

@Rogergarymichael: hmm. I was just about to try reinstalling PMS! If you say that also doesn’t help: HELP!!!

Is the matching / downloading of new metadata working for you?

I’m also running on Win10 - so this might be related to an more or less recent update. I also cannot understand what went wrong.

@sa2000:
127.0.0.1:32400/web, localhost:32400/web -> both “no settings”
plex.tv/web -> the PMS is not accessible. Which is actually a bit odd as I even had (accidentally!) PnP for the port forwarding activated -> PMS did not open a port there as one would expect.

So, the problem could have something to do with a dodgy connection to the plex(.tv) server? No idea how Plex works in the background to give access to settings. Seems rather odd the whole PMS crumbles and becomes useless when offline from plex.tv.

EDIT: I tried plex.tv/web with an VPN connection and it showed the PMS. But still no settings.

Could try and get logs from Plex Web as well as the server. and concentrate on getting connection through localhost to work: localhost:32400/web - we know there are issues for example with Microsoft Edge and 127.0.0.1

Assuming we do not have Plex Home active and no PlexOnlineHome setting in registry

If a pin was added to the Plex Web App user account, you could remove it
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/204245033-I-forgot-my-Plex-Home-PIN-how-can-I-reset-it-How-can-I-change-my-PIN-

So via localhost:32400/web
Enable Plex Web App verbose logging: Settings / Web / Show Advance / Debug / Enable Verbose Logging and save changes
Restart Plex Media Server - with Debug Logging hopefully already enabled on the server
Wait 5 minutes
Retry access through localhost:32400/web
and see if library acccessible
and then see if server settings accessible

if not, get screenshot and Plex Web App log : Settings / Web / Show Advanced / Debug / View Logs / Select All and copy to text file
And save to text file and upload with screenshot and Plex Media Server.log

How do I switch Plex Home (temporily) off? Will I lose the user data?

You have actually already gone through disabling Plex Home as you have reported here:

What I was giving you as something to try now is removal of any residual pin on your account

@sa2000: thanks for your help!

I followed your steps and attached now the two log files. I didn’t know what screenshot you need, please advise and I will add it asap! THX a lot!

Sorry have not come back earlier with feedback on the new logs you posted. You did not give an answer as to whether there was a pin on the account and if you managed to remove it as per info on this support page
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/204245033-I-forgot-my-Plex-Home-PIN-how-can-I-reset-it-How-can-I-change-my-PIN-

The logs you posted show a lot of things wrong. The server was failing to communicate with the system plugin. It was also failing to communicate with external web servers relating to its security certificates. Issues such as those with the system plugin communication are normally caused by added security products / settings / proxy / vpn software / firewall settings.

Also you may have DNS Rebinding blocking in the router affecting local secure communications - but this should not affect localhost

Furthermore some Plex Web queries to the server, eg to get the list of items for recently added media or on Deck list, these requests were taking a very very long time and Plex Web app was timing out on them before the server got a response out. May need database optimization.

I see you are using Firefox - have you tried other browsers?

I will list the issues that show up in the logs

Failure to get through to external domain ocpx.digicert.com - relates to the security certificates Plex uses for SSL / https secure connections

I believe Plex Web App times out after 20 seconds so most of these completed after Plex Web App gave up. For these it might be simply need to optimize the database.

For the other issues there may be some security software / proxy / vpn causing the failures. In one case i have seen curl error 56 returned when jumbo frames were in use (MTU Size > 1500) - normally it would be error 52 - no harm in double checking MTU size on the network cards and also in router - as well as looking into security software running

Dear @sa2000: thank you for your thorough working through the logs and help in general. This is highly appreciated!

Firstly, I did manage to switch off the PIN for the main/admin user (Sorry for not telling). But no effect.

Except for the goolge-analytics.com (blocked by country), all the websites generally work. So this must be really specific to PMS or the PC.

Yet, will thoroughly & systematically double-check all links and see if I can open them as well as the PMS settings page in Firefox/IE/Edge. Maybe this brings something new up, but I doubt it.

I could send you the logs from the PMS installed in the same network. This might be helpful to identify whether or not it is a network issue. But as the PMS on the NAS is expeirencing no (obvious) issues, I’m tempted to say: this is not an network issue.

So, if I draw the right conclusions, something is blocking PMS on my Win10 machine. This could only be the windows firewall as I don’t have additional security software installed. I double-checked and saw PMS has full access.

At this point, I will double-check as mentioned above and will also run a optimization but I think the best would be to uninstall and reinstall, or? If this fixes the problem: great, if not, we need to do more digging.

That seems to be the most efficient method at this point as there havent been any changes in the network and another PMS on the NAS is running w/o obvious problems.

Hm, no, at the moment these two problems don’t seem related to me. Might be the same root somewhere in Win10 but symptoms seem different. I can access my PMS with PHT (same machine) and iOS without problems - although the time until initial connection seems to be quite slow.

In the meanwhile I also tested with the Win10 firewall switched off but no result.

In the meanwhile I can also confirm that the problem persists in Firefox, IE and Edge as well as Safari on iOS.

I can also confirm that I can access the domains (plex.tv, ocpx.digicert.com, etc.) through browser without any problem.

IMHO this should conclude this is not a network related issue but either PMS internal or Win10 is blocking something coming from PMS.exe.

Lets look at the rules in the firewall and network profile that is in use within windows

I need to see program rules for the Plex Media Server exe files including PlexScriptHost.exe and to be for all ports / all communications - so allowing the programs full exceptions

Also separately Port Rules - these do not specify any program files
So we need
Inbound Port Rule
Protocol TCP
Local Port 32400
Remote Port : Any
Remote IP: Any
Scope: All network profiles
Action: Allow

Any other internet security in place ?

Could we also double check the MTU Size everywhere - on the network adapter and in the router to see that it is not more than 1500

As a separate matter - need to optimize the Plex Media Server library database to see if the long timings go away. Is the library very large ? you were getting up to 55 seconds to retrieve recently added media list from the database

OK, I checked the rules for PMS and PlexSricptingHost → everything already open.

I manually opened port 32400 in the windows firewall as recommended.

I double-checked MTU size and actually optimized to 1464 from 1500.

→ the problem still persists, no change whatsoever. I don’t have any other security software installed (except for Spybot S&D).

I did optimize the database, too. But except for the fact that PMS loads the “home screen” (on Deck, recently added, etc) now, it still does not match or download metadata. But, it shows “matching”, “downloading”, “finished” in the status now. But it still doesn’t seem to do / get anything.

Hm. Reinstall? New computer?

Zip whole logs folder and attach
And what time was firewall changed / restarted

and screenshots of firewall rules to show which profiles they apply for and screenshot of firewall top level screen to show which network active Private network etc

I did download the latest PMS 0.9.15.2 and installed it over the 0.9.15.1 -> no effect, problem still persists.

I did uninstall PMS via Win10 App and manually erased the PMS folder in AppData (which, btw, freed additional 10GB!!! -> why is this stuff not erased when uninstalled???), run CCleaner registry cleaner, restarted and reinstalled PMS 0.9.15.2 -> NO EFFECT, problem still persists but the PMS is now completely useless as I cannot even add the old media folders.

Sorry, @sa2000, I just see your posts. Will post the logs/screenshots. But there might be less value now as they are clean.

Still communications are blocked between Plex Media Server.exe process and the system code bundle through 127.0.0.1 and also repeated error 56 on requests from Plex Media Server.exe process and the plex.tv servers.

I see you have done a fresh install at 22:42 (23 January). I also see that when you shut down Plex Media Server at 23:00 it did not manage to stop the other processes and PlexScriptHost.exe process continued to run when the server process was killed but on restart it noticed old residual process and killed it. Just mentioning it because it is always best to check Windows Task Manager after exiting the server and shutting down to make sure all processes for Plex Media Server got terminated and to force end them if not.

Back to our problem - is it possible you have some added product that is causing this. An example that comes to mind is TCP Optimizer which was discovered recently as cause of such issues - see this support page for details and what steps were needed to recover the situation https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/215609417-Windows-Local-Plex-Web-App-times-out-or-never-loads
This is just an example of a third party tool that stops Plex Media Server working - you may have this or something else that is giving rise to these issues
