Don’t try to use Microsoft Edge as your browser. It doesn’t work.
I agree. Google Chrome is my default browser. I was just trying to see if I could reach the webpage with an other browser as Chrome gave me a connection error.
Try the repair procedure anyway. There is a backup created, so it is easy to go back.
For some users, some weird behaviour was solved by it.
On Windows, reboot from time to time.
It also helps to instruct the anti virus software to stay out of the Plex data folder
Thanks for your effort. I already did that, using the instructions found elswhere on the forum. There was an error:
Error: no such collation sequence: naturalsort
which I fixed with an another thread. The rebuild database was not functioning as well. I have to tell though that 5154 start ok with the 'repaired’database. Checking the database file again, after shutting down Plex, this error returns. It seems that Plex is doing something to the database.
Yes, there are 2 additional commands to execute before the original repair procedure. These are included in my linked procedure above, btw´.
After you start the server for the first time with a repaired database, it has to re-create several index tables. This can take a long time on a slower system, with a big library (big library= many items [not so much the amount of storage taken by the media])
If you are saying that the weirdness returns almost immediately, then I assume that either this process of recreating the indexes is disturbed or that there are errors occuring during it.
Is your server short on RAM or space on the volume where the Plex data folder is situated?
It might also be that the corruption of the original database is too severe to be repaired by the repair procedure.
PC/Server specs should be sufficient. It has 16gb memory and the data is stored on a SSD with sufficient free space. I’m not to eager to start all over. I suppose I will lose more stuff than just my library info, like users, friends, watched markings.
Users are stored in your account, not your server.
Friends ditto
Watched states can be exported https://support.plex.tv/articles/201154527-move-viewstate-ratings-from-one-install-to-another/
You can try this: Take another machine/VM and install Plex Server. (There is no limit on how many machines you can install and use Plex server)
Sign it in to your plex account.
When you go then into Users - Friends/Home Users, all your managed users and friends should be listed. All you have to do is to make the proper checkboxes to grant them access to the appropriate library sections on the new server.
Thanks again. One of the few times I wish it was raining instead of the blue sky and sunny weather we’re having over here, I’ll put some effort in it later on, remaining on and enjoying 5154 for now.
Hi Ottokerner,
I copied a backup db from today to a new directory and did the integrity checks. All OK.
I also checked the Plex Media Server log after turning on logging. All OK.
So the logs and Db are clean, what do I check next?
Thanks for the assist on this.
Here is a bunch of stuff to try:
- perform the database repair nonetheless
- perform a manual, clean installation of the new plex version, like so:
- Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
- deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
- for safety, reboot Windows
- freshly download the installation exe of the new version and install it
- make sure you are not using Microsoft Edge for accessing the web app
- define the exemption rule in the settings of your anti virus for the Plex data folder
- disable IPv6 support in Plex
Been trying again and found this in the PMS Plugins Logfile when starting on 5223.
2018-06-30 17:51:31,163 (168c) : CRITICAL (core:574) - Exception writing to E:\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Data\com.plexapp.system\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Data\com.plexapp.system\StoredValues (most recent call last):

Now, my data directory has been moved to E:\ … but that looks like a malformed directory within Plex itself.
The main Plex Server log reflects this error from com.plexapp.system
Jun 30, 2018 17:48:30.094 [6052] ERROR - Error received reading configuration for com.plexapp.system,
This looks like a coding error reading the system settings.
I’m working on getting clean logs from both versions.
What type of drive is E:
? (external, networked [or worse], mechanical, ssd)
Which file system was used to format it?
Internal WD 1TB NTFS
Did you think of defining E:\Plex Media Server
as a no-go zone for your anti virus?
Have you ever started Plex Server ‘As Administrator’?
If you did, there might be certain files in your plex data folder now inaccessible to a normal user. You’ll have to repair the access permissions and reset everything to the default, which permits write access to the Windows user account under which you are running Plex Server.
Here is a tool to do that: http://lallouslab.net/2013/08/26/resetting-ntfs-files-permission-in-windows-graphical-utility/
I counter with 5154 works … everytime.

I see that you did not actually perform the full database repair procedure.
Did you download a fresh copy of the plex setup .exe? Downloads can get corrupt sometimes.
E:\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Data\com.plexapp.system\Plex Media Server\Logs\PMS Plugin Logs
This doesn’t look like a valid location for logs.
Is it possible, that there was a mixup of paths? What is currently set as location of ‘The path where local application data is stored’ under
Settings - Server - General - ‘Show Advanced’ ?
Hi Ottokerner,
I have downloaded fresh versions.
The directory in settings is “E:”
With 5154 the logs are all in the “E:\Plex Media Server\Logs” directory.
With 5223 the “Plug-in Support” logs have moved to a new location.
Re-install 5154, they move back to “E:\Plex Media Server\Logs”
These changes are definitely a result of changes in the upgrade file.
I did not extract the sql and then rebuild the db as there were no errors found in any of the integrity checks, or errors in the logs.
These checks are not 100% reliable. Some issue they cannot recognise. Which is why I recommended to repair it anyway.
That is concerning. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that you don’t have a subfolder defined for your plex data, but are using just E:
Why does it work with 5154 then. Nothing else changes but the version of software?
