Server unreachable from plex.tv, reachable from Android app

Hey,

plex.tv currently shows my server as unavailable (“plex will try to reconnect to this server”), but I can reach it and stream videos remotely from my Android app without issues.

It’s not really a big deal for me, but I’m curious, as I thought the mobile apps went through the same channels as the plex.tv web app.

Any idea as to what might go wrong on the website?

Thanks,

Dan

The mobile app does go through Plex.tv to broker the initial connection unless your mobile app has a manual connection and is accessing your server’s external DNS / IP directly

No manual connections on my device, so going through plex.tv.

The error is different on the webapp today, I get (again) the “Can’t reach server securely” message, and can reload insecurely.

And in the server settings, I get this message (while insecurely connected from outside my local network) :
Not available outside your network Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network. Learn more

I am running 1.2.7.2987, and the server says an update is available. Is there some kind of logic that breaks secure access when a new version is available? It feels like it isn’t the first time I’ve had this kind of error when a new version is available.

That message is telling you the server cannot be connected to by Plex.tv .

Settings - Server - Remote Access is where you establish this connection. Doing this sets up the connection where the plex.tv server and your server share your IP address so it can find you when you’re remote. Your plex apps or plex.tv via the browser can connect to your server without knowing its current IP.

There’s something else going on with secure connections for you. A virus scanner/firewall perhaps? Also know that some clients, usually the older ones, cannot communicate via https. By default, PMS always wants to be secure. This was fully implemented back in the 0.9.17.x days after overwhelming user request. Most browsers will jump to secure (https) even if you enter a http url. I do not own android-based products so cannot advise you of its behavior

Could it be linked to a change of public IP on my box? Is there some latency before the certificate magic takes place for the new IP?

There is some latency. PMS has an automatic check mechanism built in (hourly I believe). If you catch it during that time, it will most likely fail.

Your logfiles will clearly show when it detects the new public IP and notifies plex.tv
