Remote and shared access issues - started ~mid-Aug 2021

As of sometime in the last week, I intermittently can’t connect to my brother’s server (always remote) nor mine remotely. Seems others are having issues the last week too. Did something change?

FYI, my brother and I are both running pretty much OOB Plex server setups on Windows PC’s, no special settings on our routers, etc…and it’s always just worked…until the last week/few days. Neither of us have made changes to Plex nor routers/network (except maybe allowing auto-updates). We’ve shared libraries with each other.

Right now:
From web player installed with my Plex server on Windows PC: both servers available and shows stream fine
From Android Mobile app: brother’s server shows offline, mine accessible whether on same network (wifi) or mobile network (cell service, wifi turned off)
From plex.tv web portal: both servers show “app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “XX Server” securely”
From Roku on my network: brother’s server shows as unavailable, my server works fine

Ideas, workarounds, ETA on fix?

Check secure connection settings on the Plex Servers and clients. Make sure they are compatible.

PMS: Settings → Network → Secure Connections. You want Preferred or Required.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had read thru that before posting…but I did go ahead and check the client settings on my Android phone. It was set to never allow insecure connections…I switched it to always allow insecure connections, re-launched the app, and it still shows my brother’s server as unavailable. I had him check his settings…they’re correct. He installed latest server version and rebooted…still no luck. I can log into his account directly from my Roku and see/stream OK…but when I log into his account from Android, it says it’s unavailable.

Lots of different behaviors depending on device/platform/app, which account I’m logged into, and what I’m trying to access. None of this was an issue a week ago, and no changes were made by me nor my brother on Plex nor our networks.

One of the threads was indicating some issue cropped up with OpenDNS recently…but I haven’t looked into that yet.

Any other ideas?

@mdpublic I am having similar issues. But in my case they only appear on a desktop browser. iPhone on 4G works fine. There is something wrong with app.plex.tv but Plex admins are not responding.

Updates: I checked several times from several devices, and sometimes setups that were working before were not working (i.e. logged into my brother’s account from my upstairs Roku…it wasn’t working late last night)…and vice versa (like logged into my account but viewing my brother’s content from my Android phone…it worked late last night).

I looked into the OpenDNS issue. I have a Google mesh wifi setup, and it uses 8.8.8.8 by default (Google DNS)…which people say works for them…so that doesn’t seem to be the problem.

There’s definitely something intermittent going on. Pretty frustrating that between the membership fees and influx of money & people Plex has had, they have no true support options and aren’t responding to the forums.
