Server version 1.9.7.4441 quits playing before the end of the file.

Video playback is ending with exactly 1 minute and 05 seconds remaining on multiple videos. mp4’s and mkv’s alike. Server is on a Windows 10 machine and I have a Roku 4 as my streaming device. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app on the Roku and left the default settings and still have the issue. I am always running my PLEX server with the current update.

This is very frustrating and pretty much defeats the purpose of having a home media streaming device if the playback ends right at the climax of every single video.

And this is why I no longer accept each PMS update. After my entire metadata for all my library was trashed and I had to re-do absolutely everything I am very, very wary. I’m not sure at all how safe PMS beta releases are (yes, I know they’re beta). I have made too much of an investment in my media to have PMS trash it all again as a “benefit” of being a Plex Pass member.

According to the fix notes for the previous version, this was one of the fixes - which was not a problem I had ever encountered. Overnight the server updated to v1.9.7.4441 and the problem started - to be clear - it was not doing this yesterday.

I’m trying to watch Will and Grace - which are MP4 files encoded with MPEG4 for the video and AAC for the audio - they are therefore requiring transcoding to play on the Chromecast. Episodes are ending early and skipping to the next episode around 60 seconds before the end, replaying the episode and seeking to the part where it skipped will let me see the rest but generally skips to the next episode again around 15 seconds before the file finishes. I’ve tried turning HW transcoding off which hasn’t really made any difference to the problem.

I’ve done a cursory test with a Chromecast friendly MP4 (ie doesn’t require transcoding) which appears to play to the end - but I’ve only tested this by seeking to the end - I haven’t tried watching the entire file - I will give it a go in a bit.

Same issue here

Same issue is happening with me as well. I noticed it while it was transcoding H265 in an MKV container. I’m going to drop back to server version 1.9.6 to see if that fixes the issue… as suggested in this and other threads about this issue.

The ‘skips to the next entry in the playlist’ issue occurs with Roku if you have Auto Play configured in the general settings of the Roku app… if you are using Roku. I turned that option off and it just stops playing altogether before the episode is complete. So that feature seems to be working as intended for me… just prematurely.

Same problem here with Plex 1.9.7.4441 on Unraid Plex Docker

I’m glad to see that it’s not just me. It happens consistently on both my Roku units. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a movie or a TV show.

Same issue after updating to 1.9.7.4441. Using Roku clients. According to a thread on Reddit, taking the Transcoder throttle buffer down to 10-15 seconds fixed the issue for all. Maybe it’s related to this new Disk Cache feature? I hope we get a hotfix in soon or I’ll be moving back a version.

Using Chromecast Ultra + PMS Version 1.9.7.4441 (docker build) on:

$ uname -a:
Linux <hostname> 4.10.0-22-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 22 17:43:20 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ lsb_release -a

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 17.04

Codename: zesty

The end of a tvshow file ends early in the last minutes. It is not specific to a particular file.

Same problem here watched Supergirl tonight and Walking Dead last night both cut off a minute before the show ended. Watching on a Roku 3 with plex pass and server version 1.9.7.4441

I was having this problem for a couple of days on unRAID, too. Switched back to the latest public release and it seems to be better now.

The hotfix for the early exit when playing transcoded media is now available as Plex Pass Beta Release 1.9.7.4460

  • (Playback) Playback would end early on some devices

1.9.7.4460 seems to be working for me.

Same thing started happening to me on both an xbox one/chromecast/roku 3

the xbox one started developing awful stuttering issues and completely freezing so switched over to roku which closed out of 2 shows early

chromecast did the same thing on 3rd episode i tried

It is still happening for me with 1.9.7.4460.

Will need some logs to start investigating it

Could you try with the latest beta - see https://plex.tv/downloads
See this for enabling logging on the server https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201643703-Reporting-issues-with-Plex-Media-Server
restart the server to get fresh logs
and would be good to get client app logs - you did not mention what roku?
See https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201869908-Log-Files

And collect the logs when the issue arises. Please note down the time and what was being watched and what actually happened and post here

It may be necessary to get the problem with a small file so that it can be made available to reproduce the issue

I am having this issue now with versions 1.18.0.1846 through 1.18.1.1973. I am using PMS on ubuntu server and hw transcoding on a p400. Seemly random videos will end early 2-5 minutes. It appears to be when the transcoding finishes. In the zip file i attached, this happens to user McCalebs on Legend of Korra episode Long Live the Queen at Oct 17, 2019 13:48:46.139 in Plex Media Server.log

This happens for me with a Windows Plex server (currently on 1.18.0.1913) playing x265 that is transcoding for a roku 3.

I get it with just h264 stuff.

I have also had two shared users report that with a Roku and when trans-coding movies and episodes stop playing with approximately 5 minutes left to go.

@sa2000 can we get a comment or acknowledgment?
