Playback Terminated. Conversion failed. The transcoder process crashed

Server Version#:
Player Version#: 6.9.12.7411
Element TV
ROKU OS (Model 3600X Software 10.5.0)
Not my server, not sure how to get details.
Not sure how to get logs.

Playback Terminated. Conversion failed. The transcoder process crashed.
It looks like this issue started the day of the new Player Version release. This is my first post, so I am not sure what else I need to include. I was hoping that other people would be seeing the same thing since the update and this would be a known issue that is being looked into, but I haven’t found any matches to this topic recently. Frustrating topic if anyone chooses to help since I really don’t know what I am doing… Just an end user…

Element TV using the ROKU OS?

Need to add more details like server info, version and logs:Reporting issues with Plex Media Server | Plex Support

I started having this issue yesterday, most likely after an update to Plex. It crashes with the error mentioned in the subject just a few minutes away from the end of an episode, and both episodes that crashed have been transcoding the audio.

Server Version: 1.25.0.5282-2edd3c44d

I’m streaming using an TCL Roku 65R617 on Roku OS 10.5.

Plex Media Server Logs_2021-12-01_23-20-01.zip (4.0 MB)

I’ve noticed this problem since last night after installing the latest update earlier. Did not happen on these TV clips the day before.

I have an independent Roku Ultra fed by my Asustor NAS running the Plex server (version 1.25.1.5286)… I’ve never seen this before. Pass member, full RAM on the server, and happens to any clips (mkv’s or mpr’s in my case) over 45 min long or so with subs.

Having the exact same issue as well. Same error message, on multiple TV’s. Multiple episodes. Always within the last few minutes of the stream. Doesn’t matter the length of the stream, or the file type.

FYI…I uninstalled PMS on my Asustor, then reinstalled the earlier version. The error has not shown up where it appeared before.

I’m having the exact same issue. It seems to be affecting files with HE-AAC 7.1 audio that’s being transcoded, and the transcoder crashes approximately 35 minutes into playback (with approximately 12 minutes left). No other transcoding has this problem.

Edit: the issue is much more widespread than above. It’s affecting virtually everything I throw at my Roku TV that’s more than 45 minutes or so.

Having the exact same issue:

Server Version 1.25.2.5319 on Asustor NAS
Player Version 6.9.12.7411 on TCL Roku TV

Issue started on previous server version (1.25.1.xxxx) and persists after updating.

Error on Player: “Conversion failed. The transcoder process crashed.” Occurring always a few minutes away from the end of played videos where only audio is being transcoded (DTS → EAC3).

Same Here. Here are error logs that I caught.

I also am having the same issues as described above… latest Plex server, streaming from Roku TV, crashes on AAC files right near the end.

I saw one person say an uninstall fixed the issue. Not keen to do that, but I can understand why that might help, based on feedback of the same issue with Windows users (older cases in the Forum). Removing the transcoding folder tended to solve the issue. A re-install might perform a similar process. But I’ve had problems with Plex uninstalls in the past. Don’t want to go through that again.

Hoping a fix comes out soon. Latest Plex update doesn’t do it.

Thanks
Michael

I wanted to post again to say this issue is far more widespread than I originally thought. I’ve been sick with the flu watching various nature documentaries (the only thing they have in common is their relatively long durations), and the problem consistently happens when there are several minutes left. It’s going to require a fix for a lot of things to be playable again.

Same thing happening here with the transcoder crashing error over the past two weeks. Originally this was only happening on one anime series I was watching, Roku Ultra 2017 and 4K Roku Ultra 2020 pulling from my PMS on Linux Mint 20.1 (quad-core i5 Dell PC) updated as of today. It tends to stop at about the same time on every episode, and once it stops (crashes) you have to hit the OK button, resume playback, and it plays for another 60 seconds or so. Wash, rinse, repeat, but at some point it gives up the ghost and shows that the episode has been played (even though there’s about 2:30 left in the half-hour ep). I checked the bitrate, it was 1.8Mbps @ 1080 (on a 1080 TV) streaming wirelessly on a newer TP-Link AC mesh which has had no problem playing shows streaming at almost 10Mbps.

Tonight my wife was watching something totally different (an old Frosty the Snowman show in SD) and it did the same thing.

Anything I can provide (logs, more codec use info, etc.) to make this go away?

 I was watching Frosty when it happened too! Several others since then but that was the first instance. Funny.

What’s the last known, confirmed Plex server version before this issue came about? Aka… what’s a good rollback version#

Version 1.24.5.5173 is the last trouble-free version I’ve noted. That’s for my Linux-based Asustor NAS.

Confirmed, I reverted to this version in my container and having no more issues.

I am also seeing this problem. Videos stop playing near the end of their duration. I was able to consistently reproduce this crash by playing a video that had crashed previously and fast forwarding to approximately the last 5% of its duration and playing until the crash happened.

In my experience, videos which had to transcode their audio to EAC3 crashed. Some examples:

DTS 5.1 to EAC3
DTS-HD MA 5.1 to EAC3
TRUEHD 5.1 to EAC3
AAC 7.1 to EAC3
AAC 5.1 to EAC3

Server OS: Ubuntu 20.04.3
Plex Media Server version: 1.25.2.5319
Player OS: TCL Roku TV
Player version: 6.9.14.7448-9fa2246a1-Plex

Botono!

Thats a great discovery. Now only if Plex or someone from Roku could figure out what broke in the last couple updates and fix it!

Reverting to 1.24 also fixed the problem here.

Where are we able to roll back to that version? I went into my plex database and only have update exe’s back through most of the 1.25 updates. Is there another method to this, or an outside source that has that installer? Thank you!
