I can’t seem to find any sort of setup guide, or explanation of how the LiveTV function works outside of a couple of very specific setup scenarios.
I’ve got a Synology DS1813+ running PMS and two NVidia SHIELDs running as clients. Based on what I’ve read, it seems like I’m S.O.L. with this setup if I want to use LiveTV (?). Or is there a way to connect a tuner to the Synology and have PMS recognize it…?
Kinda have the same question…not exact same setup. I run PMS on a 415+ and want to add live TV via an HDHomeRun Connect. Can the Synology run the tuner and enable LiveTV to my clients?
Yes, the Synology can use a HDHomeRun as a tuner for Live TV/DVR.
Keep in mind, you may need to transcoder mpeg2 to h264 if you use IOS, which your CPU might not be able to handle…
Shield does support mpeg2 and direct play should work fine.
Ah, OK. For some reason, I was under the impression that the new LiveTV would skip the need for a separate recording device like the HDHomeRun, and would work with just a straight-up antennae/tuner connection, handling the recording itself.
Can you help clarify what the big deal about LiveTV is, then? Is it just a fancy interface that controls a separate tuner/DVR device like the HDHomeRun? I’m not super clear on what’s really different from, say, having an HDHomeRun setup that’s recording OTA, then saving the files in a place where they’re indexed by Plex. Is the only new thing with LiveTV the ability to watch programming live instead of, like, recording it OTA and playing it back as soon as it’s done?
HDHomerun in a tuner, that you plug into an antenna into. I’m confused when you say ‘it will just work with a straight-up antenna/tuner connection, handling the recording yourself’.
This is exactly what a HDHomeRun is, a tuner device that you plug a network connection and a antenna into. It’s not a DVR. It doesn’t record anything, or save it, unless you purchase ‘hdhomerun dvr’ and run it on a computer, which is similar to what Plex Media Server does, except you can do alot more with PMS.
Live TV is the ability to use tuner devices, such as a HDHomeRun or a USB tuner, and watch live TV from anywhere.
It builds off our previous DVR functionality, which just allowed you to record TV, but you couldn’t watch anything until it was over and processed.
But with the Synology, unless you compile your own kernel on it, it doesn’t support any tuner devices besides network ones. We’re working with Synology to hopefully include some USB Tuner support in their kernels so folks can use those tuners too, but it’s slow progress. If you’re a Syno user who would like this functionality, be sure to tell them!
