Is there a way to record TV shows and then download them to mobile devices without the need for conversion. I tried downloading as “original” for quality in the iOS device but it still converted. I know that it will take more space.
The native iOS player used by Plex is quite restricted and won’t natively play most of the OTA content you will record. The new experimental player is improving this situation but from what I remember it’s not yet used / considered when syncing content (e.g. to avoid content that cannot be played if you switch players).
I suppose once the experimental player is made the standard player, this might change (no promises).
Thanks for the help! Still trying to figure this out. The goal for me is to do the conversion for downloading a head of time. Is there a file format that Plex would allow me to just download to my mobile devices?
I would have my computer automatically convert the TV shows when they are finished airing and then move the converted file to my Plex library. Then when I’m traveling and want to download a show for offline viewing, the Plex server would just download (skip conversion).
You can check what format goes best for your respective device.
With iOS, you’ll be best off with mp4/m4v a container, h.264 encoded video, 2-channel aac or up to 5.1 channels A3C audio and srt subtitles (if at all). As for the highest bitrates supported for each stream things can get a little more tricky.
Handbrake comes with a great set of device specific presets that should work fine for those respective devices.
