Shared Library Access With local users

Server Version#: 1.30.1.6497

Hello, I am trying to figure how to allow local users access to a shred library. Example I have given access to my library to another plex pass user and they can access the server/library from there account, but all of their local users cannot access the shred library. Use case would be to share my library with another user and they want to allow a child to access media in the library I shared with them.

You can create managed users for your kids or people who live in your home.

If you share your library with your friend in another location, they cannot share your library items with their children in their home, if that’s what you’re asking

I believe this feature suggesting is asking for this ability

Plex has never allowed that. Only users that you share a library with directly can access it.

A few have requested this ability, but most Plex users are against it.

Ok I am curios, why are most against this?

Somebody posted the math in a recent discussion.

If you share with 10 friends and each have a “full” Plex Home where they share with 14 additional (managed) users, you’ll suddenly be sharing with up to 150 users. This can rather quickly explode the resources required on your server to stream and potentially transcode all their streams.

Thanks, got it and understand I think it would still be nice to have an option under the user you have allowed shared access to let local account access.

Thats why I suggested an off/on switch so you can control it per shared user. Bandwidth is cheap and I am only wanting access for local users not resharing with another user. Hopefully they implement this feature, or I find a way around it.

I read it but that is extreme case scenario and unlikely one person would have 14 streaming at one time. My actual case uses are to share my library with 1 other person that would like local/managed users to have access to my shared content. A real-world scenario for my use case would be a max of 2-3 people streaming at the same time. Again, that is why, I suggested control over who can share with the local/managed users. To each there own, I personally will find a way around it because it’s what I want to do, and I have the bandwidth and hardware to support if a person does not, don’t share or turn this feature on.

I don’t think anyone, at least in this post is asking for the ability to share your server with people in a Plex home AND any other person your friend feels like sharing your server with outside his home

I share my server with my friend and I can see that he has 4 people in his Plex home by expanding a drop-down menu

Disabled by default and I can then choose to tick a box next to 1 or all of the 4 names associated with my friends account to allow access to my server or not (this should only apply to people in a Plex home not other outside servers)

The scenarios imagined are worse case and assume that a server owner will have absolutely no control over the now 100’s of people they are unwillingly sharing with

As it stands now, I have to share my server with my friend and all 4 of the other people in his house independently with their own accounts created with an email. That essentially destroys a parent’s ability to “manage” their children’s servers

There is no reason for fear and inflated numbers to cause paranoia.

The server owner should ALWAYS have complete control over this and there’s no reason to assume otherwise
