How can i share friend’s server with my local home users?
You can’t.
Only your friend can share his server with additional users.
And for him to share with your family members, they all have to be full plex.tv members (without the need to buy Plex passes!).
thanks, i was hoping to keep my kid off my username.
I am not sure what you mean by that.
If you are implementing this, each of the kids will have a user name of their own.
I think I have had a similar goal. For the plex pass users option it is odd that it has the same limitations of not being able to share all media that you have access to through your account, since they are also logged in to your username. My goal was to be able to setup profiles for myself, my wife etc, where we could each keep track of our position in a show and which movies we have watched separately. I have always understood not being able to share a friends server with another friend, but this scenario is just allowing you to lock down a kids profile to be restricted by content etc, or to keep separate on deck lists, etc.
they aren’t.
I am referring to the managed users option, vs adding a full user to your home.
They are linked to the admin account but they are separate with their own account ID and such. They are not local to the server they are an account at plex.tv just like yours. They just don’t have emails or passwords. Another full user who is not the admin in the home could log into a device and switch to the managed user.
I would still think that this would be a scenario where it would be up to us how we lock down our accounts instead of not giving us the option. Even if you added it as an option that the friend sharing had to check a box to allow us to share it within our home. In the current scenario if I want to be able to let others in my home view any content from friends then I have to allow them all content as they are logging in directly as me instead of utilizing the users feature which would allow to limit access to content I deem appropriate.
Let me be clear I have no problem with what you want assuming the persons whose media it actually is can stop you from doing that if they choose.
If I share my media with you that does not mean I want to share my media with your kids or whomever you decide. I may have a slow computer and not want you and whomever streaming at the same time. I may just not like your kids, spouse or whomever.
I hate this idea. It’s not for you to decide who has access to someone else’s media. Your friend shared with you. Not you and anyone you choose.
But I am not saying me and anyone I choose, I am saying me and the other users in my home. I currently do the same thing, we just don’t get the benefits of being able to track individual statuses. I might be misunderstanding what the home feature is intended for, but it was my understanding that it was intended for others in the same home.
yes for YOUR media, not someone else’s media.
In the example of me sharing with you. I don’t live with you. Your kids, wife, husband, girlfriend, room mate, or whomever that may be in your home are not in my home and I have nothing to do with that.
I shared with you, not your home. If I loan my brother my car. doesn’t mean I want my nephew to use my car even if my brother thinks it is OK.
the only solution if you want your kids/family to access someone else’s server, is to create their own plex accounts (ie with separate emails), then have your FRIEND invite your kids individually.
Or to do what I do today and have us all use the same login. I lose the ability to track us all individually but as we have just recently subscribed to plex pass I am used to that. I was just trying to find a benefit to users over friends and apparently there is not one.
sure, you lose the ability to track individual play histories as well as restrictions on any adult content.
You maybe meant the only PROPER solution and I totally agree. Anything beyond that is just a really bad idea.
Fortunately anyone I share with knows and respects the rules.
They were told if their niece, brother or who ever wanted access I would gladly consider it. If they shared THEIR account with anyone then prepare to pay for Netflix etc…
It’s not rocket science with Tautulli at our fingertips, as we know.
Plex does not have the thing were you can say who is watching at the same time like Netflix does, even if we are talking about the same server. I agree that would be cool but that is a different thing than you giving away my server share to others in your home.
(did not mean to be a direct reply to Teknojunky)
this has been an issue for me for a very long time. I have 4 local users and if we want to watch media from a friends shared server, they all have to use my profile. i would really like to be able to give local users access to shared servers.
